Gun finish

What options does a guy have to get a more resilient finish on your gun metal?  I have a pair of VTR's with the matte finish, and if I leave them in the truck for any amount of time, especially when yote hunting, I start seeing little bits of surface rust.  I've heard you can get a "stainless-looking" finish put on. I'm assuming it is some sort of electroplating process.  Anyone have any ideas?

I say to hell with that pot o' gold.

IDK what it is with the VTR. I have one also, and if I dont wipe off the bolt handle right after Im done shooting, it will be orange in the morning....I was thinking of dura-coating mine or something similar.

Finish work isn't cheap.  The crap finish on the VTR/SPS is what allows many folks to afford them.

Ceracoat might work, never tried it though.  Electroless Nickle works but one must concern themselves with the potential for flaking, especially in the bolt raceways.

I have a couple matte finished guns and a few glossy black. I think the glossy are better, but a matte finish is mainly just easier to notice the rust, I think.

I have one and got pissed off enough I took it apart and soda blasted it and rebluded it Hoppe's it cured the problem  it is a lot more durable and doesn't change colors anymore. I don't buy a gun to look at as long as it shoots MOA or less

Krylon works pretty good.  Some matte finish clear coat over the top of the color helps it last longer.  It will chip off in rub/use spots.

Ever try EEZOX  I have used it for close to 20yrs to prove how good it was to a guy once I sprayed a marlin model 60 22 with it let it set over night and thru it in our  cattle water tank for a week pulled it out and let it dry in the corner for a couple of days and it never showed any signs of rust smelled like swamp for 2yrs after but it is good stuff. Better than any thing I've ever used in hot or cold . I spray my guns an let them set at least over night like to leave them for a week then wipe off and extra and they are almost bullet proof after that

I had to go look I traded in a ruger a while back that had been coated by a company there web site is acoating.com the guy that had it done paid like 175 dollars with shipping and the coating  I kept the name in my files thought it looked like a decent coating just wasn't sure I wanted to pay that much to coat a rifle but if you are going to be in the field alot in rough weather it may be what the doctor ordered this was a cerakoat finish done a couple yrs ago

I had a friend of mine duracoat my remington sps for me and that was probably the best thing i've ever done for that gun.  The finish is awesome, extremely wear resistant.  I've had it like that for 3 years now and the muzzle is pretty worn off from riding in pickup and a few other nicks and scratches but for how the guns been treated i think it held up amazingly well.

I too like EezOx.  You can spray a gun down after season and smell that the Eezox is still there on opening day next year, it doesn't get "gooey" over time either.

A good coat of "Kroil" also makes for a very good rust inhibitor.

For a "working gun" that's afield a bunch I think paint/coating should at least be considered.  Some guy in Bismarck is doing film dipping.  The matte finish  he uses makes the dipped gun feel something like the rubbery Hogue Overmolded stuff.

Seriously, is there any reason a guy can't just spray paint it?  I don't care what it looks like as long as its not rusting.
