Took a short walk around one field but didn't see any.  Too hot to walk even at 9:30.  Lots of CRP hayed/in process of being plowed up.  Here's the report from game and fish:

Upland Bird Numbers Down

North Dakota hunters should expect to see fewer upland game birds this hunting season, according to Aaron Robinson, State Game and Fish Department upland game management biologist. The season for sharp-tailed grouse, ruffed grouse and Hungarian partridge opens Sept. 10.

“Excessive water has affected reproduction in areas, but there will be some areas good for sharptails,” Robinson said. “But no doubt birds will be harder to find.”

The spring sharptail breeding population was down 30 percent from last year, with numbers falling from west to east. Losses of native prairie and acreage enrolled in the Conservation Reserve Program are negatively affecting the sharp-tailed grouse population in North Dakota, Robinson said. In addition, three consecutive harsh winters and a wet, cold spring this year delayed nesting across the state.

Hungarian partridge numbers are also down, and more localized, than last year, Robinson said. “Scouting areas will be critical to success,” he added. “At this time there is not one area that stands out from the rest. The cover is high, so hunters will need to scout and be willing to move to other areas to find localized pockets of birds.”

This spring’s statewide ruffed grouse drumming counts took a dip of 15 percent from 2010. The number of drumming males increased almost 13 percent in the Pembina Hills, but the Turtle Mountains showed a 28 percent decrease from last year.

The sage grouse and prairie chicken seasons will remain closed in 2011 due to low populations.

Shooting hours are one-half hour before sunrise to sunset. Sharptails, ruffed grouse and Huns each have a daily limit of three and a possession limit of 12.

Hunters, regardless of age, must have a fishing, hunting and furbearer certificate and general game and habitat license. In addition, hunters age 16 and older need a small game license.

Compared to years before I had a pretty poor day.  Only saw 2 and shot both of them but lost one.  Numbers are way down.  Also shot a 3 doves.

Went out yesterday until 11:30 and then it was just too hot for my dog. I have found in the mornings they are staying in the stubble later until the grass dries which has been taking a while. First spot about 15 still in the wheat stubble and spooked early, second spot about 12 and managed 3 out of there. I find that locating them the day before helps alot if you have the time to do so.
Hunt today like there may be no tomorrow!

I have been putting a lot of miles on spotting for canada geese and have seen only 1 covey here in Bottineau.  Only seen 1 covey of partridge too!!  I'm not even going to chase them this year as they need to be left alone to rebuild populations.  The winter may get what's left anyway.  Sad :0(

walked for 3 miles in prime grouse habitat in Foster/Eddy county and seen zilch... Too many tough winters/too wet during nesting. Atleast the ducks are crazy thick.

What this thread is saying is exactly what the G and F have been saying. Overall the numbers are down without question. Like always, there are pockets that faired out a little better than the rest. In my personal opinion, I think certain zones should be closed for partridge for a few years. We just can't seem to bounce back with numbers. Grouse are different that over the years, their numbers have varied a lot. At any rate, for the most part its going to be a fairly poor year for upland game.

Got back out a little early today, first spot a tried was a area that had CRP,then corn, then alffalfa side by side.Drove down the trail between the Crp and corn.Six grouse got up and flew into the corn.Yes i have permission to hunt this land, how do you get birds out of 7ft high corn??     YOU Dont!!! Went over to the other side of the corn field, this year alot of the low spots did not get planted,so there are alot of clearings in these fields.I would walk them and let the dogs work the edges.Found birds in theses spots!Mika the cenex dumpster dog is starting to come along. She found this bird after i had gave up and was heading back to the truck!!

We were able to bag a limit of grouse on Saturday morning, but like everyone else is saying it got way to hot to try and find some partridge.  Did manage 5 partridge on Saturday afternoon.  Not a lot of crop in our area.  I'd say 10% of the ground was planted this spring.  Nothing on Sunday.

twas tough hunting for this guy on saturday.  as was stated, numbers are way down.  still had a blast.  but, we did have a 15 month old pup that i think almost died on us before noon from heat exhaustion after a long retrieve with a bird in her mouth.  i've hunted my arse off in all kinds of weather and have heard about dogs working themselves to death but never witnessed it.  i have to say i learned my lesson.  please be very careful with your dogs during hot weather.  sitting with your dog waiting for your friends to bring an air conditioned truck and some water thinking you are watching that dog die in your arms is a very disheartening feeling that nobody ever needs to go through as long as we use our heads a little.  good luck.

on another note... it took me 4 long walks on monday before i got some up and shot my limit... so persistence pays off.

On opener, shot two birds on day one and none on the next day. Saw a total of 15 birds for that weekend.  This weekend, I went out on Saturday and tried new locations and saw no sharptail after walking for miles.  It is pretty sad out there.  I also notice how poor condition of the existing habitat is in.  Lots of weeds and little grass.  On a good note, there was a lot of doves to hunt this year.
