Just thought I would share with you guys, that good things are happening for hunters on base. As some of you may know we have a deer problem on GFAFB and the bow hunter's voices were finally heard.
Our Environmental flight just went from 9 total areas to bow hunt on base to 41! Until the end of this season we will have all of these areas closed to pedestrian traffic(walking trails) and stands will be hung up, along with the golf course being closed down and only open to sportsmen. Next season, there will be 26 spots open to bow hunters Sep-Nov and Dec 1, all 41 spots will be closed to peds again and open to bow hunters. Only "experienced" hunters (ones that have hunted on base prior) will be allowed to hunt the other 15 areas in Dec because of their close proximity to facilities.
Stand locations are based on a lottery system, $10 for the whole season to hunt, your abel to hunt more than one stand, if available, you have to shoot a doe before you can shoot a buck, and it is bow only. State bought tags will be used on the deer harvested on base.
If you are active duty, retired, a federal employee that works on Grand Forks AFB, or are a dependent of any active duty on GFAFB, your more than welcome to pick up a stand location.

If you want more info, PM me.

Ahhh yes! Another reason for me to love being stationed at Minot!

Sucks you can't come in from Minot. I would probably do it a couple times before I leave next year. Oh yeah, Minot has ruined my AF experience... Just another one to throw on the chalk board of why you don't wanna come to Minot.

Impala,

Minot isn't all that bad. Did you hear about the big round up they are doing on base for the deer population? 40 Something deer are being taken on the 19th with rifles...They didn't openly invite hunters though, it was decided in a secret squirrel meeting on who gets to harvest the deer. All the meat, hides and horns are going to a processer downtown. So if you get a mounter...it's going downtown to get ground up into chuck and donated to the food shelters. Fine by me, but I wouldn’t mind keeping the horns and cape.

Speak softly, and carry a big stick.

Impalla, I just asked the Big Dogg in charge to see if you would be able to come down, assuming you are active duty.
And to be three hours more to the west, is never a bad thing! I thought I would hate being here with no terrain(compared to what I am used to) and I must say, I was wrong, it is a great place to live, raise children, and make money. And I've never met people that are so willing to go the extra mile for others.

I dnt know your situation at all, but it takes a lot more than cosmetics, cold winters, and population in order for me to judge an area. ND is by far the best assignment Ive had in the AF. And Ive been to Germany, Spain, Txas, and Florida. All had there ups and downs, but ND has a lot more positives than negatives. But like I said I dont know your situation and your experience could be real $hitty up there...
