Yeah, I am already dreading it.  Not in a bad way, but a good way.

Lots of work and running around to try and be competitive.  Been too busy down home shooting and not paying attention what is happening up north.  Hoping a few birds come down.  Need snows, etc to do any good.  We'll see what happens!

Fun time though, it really is.  After scouting is done anyway.  Ha ha!

And it is more fun if you don't have birds scouted...cuz nothing can go wrong more than it has...only get better if you get lucky!

Is that the thing each year when tons of people tear around the countryside and jump up every possible field full of geese, every 10 minutes?

Been won decoying and others have placed each year.  But yes, often times the winning team is either pass shooting off of water as they leave or jumping fields.

It is thirty teams.  I'd say maybe ten are actively sneaking or pass shooting somewhere.  I know some that just lay out in the field as well waiting for them to land then piling up on them.

I do wish there was a decoy division and a sneak division or maybe a trade off of decoying one year and then any legal form of hunting is allowed the next.  Would just make it interesting.

I just hope the same people that participate the the field jumping aren't the same people that complain about some dudes from wisconsin with two dozen duck floaters hunting the water.

Most of the jumping takes place in fields.  A lot of the snows or at least big flocks of snows are sittin on refuges and off limits via the water.  Those on sneakable water are usually smaller bunches and don't do the whole "bail" game.

briningtherain-Your description is quite accurate.  It does an excellent job of conditioning most of the geese to stay across the line in Canada until freeze up and then they fly straight through.

I am a little confused. Jumping them from fields they feed in which are different on given days many times conditions them? I agree on water jumping for pushing birds to different roosts but not sure on field jumping. I feel if they, especially honkers, have safe roosts they will tolerate field jumps and decoying. If off base and I am honestly asking what does constant decoying do to them?

To me it depends on shear number of birds. If honkers and not a lot they become trained regardless and will start hitting different fields. But if a lot of birds and say they hittin same field like a pea field I think can be plenty of birds revisiting.

As for snows that is different. They are in huge flocks and it basically takes one pea brain to decide to keep flying south. When they come down they are basically in migration mode. Regardless of hunting style it again depends if the flock gets seasoned and if any replacements swing in.

Not saying birds don't get seasoned as they go but the are migrating birds by nature. To me if they have safe water and appealing winter they will hang.

Anyway goosefest is a community event that lasts for a week. Lots of activities with the final being a goose shoot. Google the event and you will get all you need for info.

There is a huge under rated talent to sneaking; reading the field, sight, sound, personal agility, etc. I done well at it 25+ years ago. I know my heart or ability can not be there again for sneaking flocks, but it should not be cut down by those that can't or know how to do it.

Decoying and calling is a different ability... if both are good at their craft the outcome hopefully will be comparable.

In all honesty, it does take talent and physical abilities to do it properly.

If you can sneak snows in a field you are almost certianly working a lot harder for your birds than people laying in decoys.  Sneaking done right is not easy - it's the guys that jump out of the truck and blast away from 90 yards at 10,000 birds roosting that give it a bad name.  To each their own.
