If you had a thousand dollars to spend on some goose decoys to start a spread, what would you go with?

I would ditto the BigFoots and also add a couple dozen RealMotion decoys.  Use one RealMotion to three Bigfoots and you have a realism factor that really works.  I would also invest in an Avery Flag and a Gillie Suit. I wish I had a thousand dollars to invest!!! I think I have about  $800 in my setup and I get plenty of the BigBoys.  Happy Honker Hunting!!

Bigfoots my ass!  Go for XFD dakotas, im really impresed with the durability of the flocking and the motion system. Weve killed 365 geese so far over them and the geese never knew what hit em.

The bigfoots would be a great choice for just starting out. Before you decide to go buy brand new, look on some of the classified sites (bismanonline, craigslist, etc.). I have found some really good deals on these sites. You will double the size of your setup by buying used decoys that are in great shape.

Your question leaves out a lot of things, like are you going to hunt late season, pressured birds etc.. My opinion is that motion and realism are needed for those situations. If you are only hunting birds from Aug to Oct then buy the most durable non flocked decoy you can and go with volume.

I have hunted over almost every brand of decoy, early on it matters not, late in the season I want a good flocked decoy that can either sit on the ground and appear to be a goose with its feet tucked or have the needed motion that the geese need to be fooled into coming in. This eliminates Big Foots.
In my lifetime I have seen fence row to fence row farming and the return of CRP and game to the landscape. Now we face again the prosepect of fence row to fence row again! Sportsman are our own worst enemy in that we fail to look forward and focus to much on the now!

Bigfoots have flocked heads, can remove feet to sit on ground, or buy the shells. They also have motion bases that can be upgraded, not to mention bigfoots take an ass kicking and still look like they are brand new! I kick mine, toss them, have had honkers pile them and they still look great! Try that with any other decoy out there!

Canada geese are probably the easiest bird out there to decoy.  If you are setup somewhat where they want to be/are flying over, you will get plenty of shooting most of the time.  I wouldn't go all out on super-duper realistic decoys unless you just really want to do that.  It depends on your hauling ability too.  Any fullbody takes up quite a bit of space and more than 3 dozen will pretty much require a trailer.  I use higdon motion shells quite a bit just because I don't really want a trailer and have geese come in just as well as when I hunt over fullbody spreads - I was out on Friday and a goose would have landed right on top of my blind if I hadn't sat up and scared it off when it was 2 feet away (already had limit).  I'd buy bigfoots or GHG fullbodies if you have the space.

I second the "you don't need high dollar dekes to kill birds" Do your homework and scout to find out where the birds want to feed, then set up there. keep in mind distances and depth perception are skewed while looking through binos so try to get three or four reference points to locate that spot in the early morning hours.

If you want to spen crazy amounts of money on decoys this is the place to do it.

GHG or Dakota are the only way to go. the lesser dakotas and ghg are taking the abuse just as good as my bigfoots did once upon a time but unlike the bigfoots they actually look like a goose

Bigfoots. The Dakota decoys look nice but unless you get the fully flocked I am worried about shine. In the Fargo scheels the non fully flocked really glistened in the lighting!

Bigfoots offer you ability to not cringe at every setup and breakdown. They deflect sun glare awesome. I will be getting a few more dozen and then a dozen or two of motion decoys. Not sure which.

What I need is a bunch of snow decoys. I need more than a 1000 bucks though!

And yes it is north Dakota. You do not need to be a genius caller, have the greatest decoys or greatest other equipment. I could shoot the same amount of geese over my thirty year old shells. We over think dark goose hunting up here. As long as proper scouting is put into effect it isn't difficult to whack geese.

I do prefer full body dekes though. Assures good profile and flocked heads are nice. It is all about confidence.

Midget,

Excellent point on removing feet and still having excellent profile.

And wow? Bigfoots don't look like geese? Ha ha, what's with that thought from some people.

Big time.  Expensive decoys are more for convincing people than they are geese... Sure they work but so do the cheap ones.  A friend of mine the other day was telling me about how he bought a dozen fully flocked decoys for $530...good lord

I have hunted over just about every decoy out there and I always go back to the Big Foots for over all satisfaction.  look like a goose, durable, price is reasonable, easy to set up and easy to take down.   If you don't have a trailer use higdon full body stackable and shells.  oh, and a  flag no matter what kind of decoy you have.  motion is good.

+a bunch on Big Foots. They might not be the prettiest decoy, but they are effective. I have some that are 12 years old, and cannot them apart from the 2 year olds. We just stack them in a trailer and go. Very durable and have killed lots of birds over them.
I must say though, that if I was looking to add to my spread, I would probably try a box or two of the Zinks.

I also agree that no matter what decoys you use, always bring a flag.  I would rather forget my calls, than my flags.

Bad decisions make great stories!

GHG Fully Flocked...can't go wrong.  you could get 2 dozen decoys in the harvester packs and have every position of decoy you need and very realistic looking decoys that don't shine.
