I started my son with the same gun i stared with a red rider. Know i want to move him up he has showwed me he can be safe and has become good with the red rider. But it lacks the power to kill some of the small game i would like to hunt with him. BUt i have not had a pellet rifle and or used one in a long time. So any help would be great i am looking to spend under 100 bucks with or with out a scope.

Can't help you on a gun, but I would suggest, and this is just me now.  What ever gun you go with, go with no scope.  Don't know how old your son is, but I am glad that i learned how to shoot with open sights and learned how to shoot well.  Save a scope for when he's older.  Just something I think every marksman should possess is good open sights shooting skills.

I've owned a lot of cheap pellet guns and never found one under $100 that shot decent groups. Finally went out to the store, bought like 5 different models, took them all home and had a shoot-off. Kept a $160 Gamo and returned all the losers. It's unreal how the groups varied with certain pellets and across guns. The Gamo loves Crow Magnum pellets. What a great name for a pellet.

Many a squirrel and rabbit have been drilled with that Gamo.

I second this.  I was an air rifle sniper when I was a kid.  I shot easily over 10,000 pellets and laid wrath over many small game.  It was a great foundation to move up the chain of guns.

Depending on the age of your son, this is a very high quality air rifle for the $$$.  I still have mine from 1993 and it still kills a lot of pests.  I went with the .22 cal and that will take game up to jack rabbits with the right shot placement.  If this is too much of a rifle for now, don't forget about it for the future.

If you just want to jump up to a little more zip, this would be good.  Well under your price point as well.

crossman with the nitro piston at Walmart.  Cheapest Nitro Piston break-barrel pellet rifle.  Much better than a spring powered rifle and alot less kick.  I put a Charliedatuna trigger in it and its a sweet shooter.  On most break-barrel pellet guns a trigger job is a must.

They have either Crossman or Benjamin models.  I bought the .22 cal model.  It has a little more knock down power and keeps the pellet under the sound barrier(much quieter).

Definitely agree.  While you're still in early training mode, teach kiddo to leave both eyes open too, whether it be open sights, scope, red dot, or shotgunning, it'll pay lifelong dividends.  He'll be faster on target and have a much more commanding view of his surroundings making him safer overall as he'll have a much better grasp of his target and it's surroundings.

This moment is a paradox, it's the oldest you've ever been as well as the youngest you'll ever be.

What is the break/cocking pressure needed to cock the nitro chamber?  Sometimes those can be a bit much for a young person.  I couldn't shoot my old mans RWS until I was a bit older and put on some muscle.  That thing cocked at like 55 pounds, though.

Crosman makes one that is called the Phantom.

I think it sells for 120 dollars at Scheels. Pretty nice little air rifle. Comes with a scope but also has open sights on it.

Somewhere in the 1000fps range

I have owned two air rifles under $50 over the past couple of years. The first was a powerline model 560, functioned well but I called it my "one-bb shotgun" because of its inaccuracy. So I dumped it in the dumpster after watching too many bb's and pellets fly like a knuckleball. Saw a decent deal on a daisy (???) Model 2100. Rifled barrel and the sights looked crisp. That piece of crap sat in the garage until this spring. Fired it one time and it never again was able to build pressure. In the dumpster with that SOB too.

Back in the market now and won't be looking under $100 again.

Daisy 880 Powerline is a great "beginner" BB AND PELLET gun.  I had them when I was a kid and still have one today.  They will definitely take out a rabbit, squirrel, prairie dog, birds etc etc.  Pretty accurate.
You can't go wrong with it.  This is the website for it, great gun can be bought at Walmart, Runnings, online.
AND it is under $100,
