good news for the vikings

Now all the Vikings have to do is lose every game next year.

Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck has decided to stay in college to get his degree instead of immediately cashing in on the riches of being the likely No. 1 pick in the NFL draft.

Luck announced his decision Thursday, more than a week before the deadline for underclassmen to declare for the NFL draft. Luck, who sat out his first year as a redshirt, has two years of eligibility remaining but is on track to graduate next spring.

“I am committed to earning my degree in architectural design from Stanford University and am on track to accomplish this at the completion of the spring quarter of 2012,” Luck said in a statement issued through the school. Stanford said Luck was not available for further comment.

It would be really neat to see that boy play for the vikings..... but if they don't get some offensive lineman would it matter who was quarterback?

They already have people with the size and athletic ability to get it done.  Adding some new blood for depth and chemistry is a good idea though.

Offensive line play is complex.  Especially at the NFL level.  It is much more than just going out and doing your job.  The entire line needs to work as a unit and often players need to make adjustments mid-play.

Do you know why they don't allow blitzes in the Pro Bowl?  You have the best offensice linemen in the entire NFL out there.  They should be able to handle whatever is thrown at them  Right?  NOPE.  They would get shredded and the QB would get killed.  Almost every play.

How can that possibly be true?  The best players in the league?  Simple.  They have a short week to practice together and cannot possibly handle more than the most basic blocking schemes against the defense.

You guys should pay attention a little more.  Anything is possible with an NFL offensive line.  Granted, the Bears gave up 52 sacks but man, it could have been much, much worse.

Tice is a genius or the players just finally started to mature.  Regardless, I was actually pleased with how the line transformed.  Not very pleased on performance overall but like I said, it could have been bad, bad, bad.

Exactly.  The Bears were horrible and improved tremendously.  Did they get rid of everybody and get a whole new line?  Nope.  Coaching and the benefit of working together over time paid off.

Tim is right even though analysts tell you the sign of a bad offensive line is to look at sack numbers. granted bad olines will give up sacks but a better indicator is to look at your runningbacks ypc. passing depends on so many factors: do you have a good qb?, is your qb mobile, what kind of passing are you doing most of the time? do you have good blocking TE's and Rb's?

the pittsburgh steelers in the past are a good example of this. not sure about this yr, but there were recent years where they would give up a high number of sacks but still make the playoffs. why, ability to run the football.

An offensive coordinator FINALLY being willing to adapt is also necessary.  Cutler was constantly asked to drop back in 7 step fashion.  Wasn't working, at all.  Cutler is also a mobile QB, he was finally allowed to scramble.

The biggest transformation was the running game.  The Bears for the first half were stagnant (some of it play calling but I think most of it was poor o-line play).  Tice figured out a combination, Martz figured out a combination and the players figured out things as well.  We ran the ball very effectively.  Haven't seen it like that since the Thomas Jones years.  Man I liked that guy.  Most underrated RB in the league.

Forte looked damn good in the second half.  He is a stellar receiver and has been all three years but something got into him.  Confidence of the line?  Play calls?  Each I suppose but he was no longer dancing, he was running people the hell over.  Man that was fun to watch.  I really, really hope that continues in the playoffs.  Our moving forward depends on it.  As improved as the line is, Cutler still doesn't have the consistent protection he needs for the Martz passing offense to succeed how he would like it to succeed.  Although, in the last packer game Cutler REALLY held onto the ball long.  At least he could have thrown it away anyway.

Tim, I agree alot with you. I haven't watched alot of bear games 3, but I do think that having alot of changes in the coaching staff has helped the o-line alot and also not having pace in the starting lineup has helped the entire unit. If you can improve the weakest link of the line the overall oline will be much better. The real ? is who is going to win this weekend?

I think the Pack, Saints, Indy and Baltimore.  Best game of the playoffs will be between Indy and Jets and Baltimore and Kansas City.  I almost picked Kansas City over Baltimore.  Just a hunch but Baltimore is pretty salty.

I agree 100% with your picks. Then Baltimore and Indy will play to go to the superbowl. I will wait with the NFC picks until after this week.

Kicking out NE eh?  That's a bold one but I'd like it to be true.

Yeah, the NFC is a mess as anyone could win.  I suppose it is true for the AFC too but the NFC is on a whole different level.

I kinda wish the Bears didn't have home field.  I think being in Chicago and in front of the fans is important but their field severely hurts them.

I just think that Baltimore matches up well against NE and NE def. just isn't that good. I think it could be a reply of last years game. It might be me just wishing NE loses as well.

Those are some pretty lofty numbers ...I'm going with 5-11....The NFC north is going to be tough...GB, Bears showed they can play...and the Lions scored a ton of points this year...I wouldn't be surprised if Minny was sitting at the bottom come year end...

as far as this years playoffs...I think the winner of the GB-Eagles will represent the NFC...AFC...I'm right there with you almost picked KC over Ravens...I know NE defense isn't what it use to be but that team is just firing on all cylinders right now...Baltimore and the Jets match-up good against them however I beleive they got the JETS number and I'm not so sure Baltimore will make it past the first week...so I gotta go with NE in the AFC....

Farnorth I agree with what your saying......again. I probably should have worded my comment better. I don't think it would matter who played quarterback for the vikings considering the way the offensive line was playing the last few games.

fish,

You aren't incorrect though.  Offensive line play is of the utmost importance in the NFL.  But I do believe it is a spectrum of the game that requires a little time and patience.

Argh, was wishing Harbaugh would have stayed at Stanford and Lovie start out the season with an 0-5 run and Harbaugh been contacted saying he'll have job offer as soon as season is over.  But nope, he's off to San Fran.
