A good spinning reel for under $200

Just ordered a Fenwich Elite Tech walleye 6'3" medium, that i will be using for jigging, lindy rigging, occasional smallmouth fishing.  Looking for a good reel under $200 to put on it. Ive always been a shimano guy, I have used stradic, sustain, stella, but looking at reviews it seems that alot of people complain that their reels aren't as good as they used to be. Anyone have experience with newer shimano's or pflueger, abu garcia, diawa etc.

I like the pflueger, I have bought three of them in the last two years. But I dont threw them in the missouri mud like I used to with my older reels.

With that said I think they are all junk, wear em out, go buy another. spend the money on the rod.

I use the pflueger presidential, its at about $60-70. I have it on most of my spinning rods. I would recomend it over any other I have used.

I still love the new Shimano Stradics have a few and have had no problems. That would be my #1.

I just ordered another Pflueger Patriarch.  Very light and smooth.

I have had good luck with the stradics.  they usually last me several fishing seasons until the anti-reverse starts slipping.  I have 3 that need to get sent in to shimano that have bad anti-reverses.  I think hammering on snags is what ruins the anti-reverse.

I have 8 Shimano Symetre 2500 FJ and just ordered 4 more. I think I like them!!! LOL Using and abusing them the first 8 are two years old and that is more than I have got out of any reel yet with the exception of my Okuma's on my slip bobber poles. Shimano also has an awesome warranty/repair service but it does take a while so it's not a quick turn.

If you use any Stradic 1000's send me a PM, I know where there are a few for $99.00.

I buy whatever is in the bargain bin at cabelas. Mostly pflueger. I use them until their shot and then toss em. Reels don't loose fish for me I guess, not can I catch more fish with a high dollar reel. I would much rather spend good money on good rods and lines/tackle.

what am I missing that one thinks he might not be able to find a fantastic spinning reel for under $200.  I've got penn senators for shark fishing that didn't cost me that much.

Pflueger president (sp?) is a great real for the coin. Make sure to get the President XT tho as it is built much more solid with less plastic and should last you awhile

You and me both.  I had a Symetre 1500 that I absolutely loved.

This is what I use to do and for me it's not about loosing or catching fish it's about holding up over time so I dont have to independently try and keep Cabelas afloat!!! That's why IMHO it's worth the investment for a better reel that you dont have to replace after one season like I was doing.

I picked up the same rod last summer, I put a Pflueger Supreme on it.  Will definitely be looking to buy the same setup again.

I have a Shimano Stradic CI4 on my jigging pole and It's got to be one of the best reels I have ever owned. Paid $192.00 for it.

Also own a older Shimano 30 series and a SAR2500F (which I had to return because  it continued to malfunction but Scheels replaced it).

I have some mixed reviews on the older Abu Garcia spinning reels I own ( all were under $100). Not terrible but some little quirks to each reel.

I just went out and bought the new Quantum Smoke PTi($159) and put it on a Smoke rod. I also bought three of the Quantum Kinetic PTi, a 10, 20 & 30 for $99 and put them on Fenwick rods.

I'm headed to the tailrace this weekend and I'll let you know how they perform.

Report back on the smoke PTi reel please. I ordered one back in November and it was on back order for a few months so I just cancelled the order and bought a Ci4 for my rod that gillgetter is making me. Still might buy a smoke though so a review would be swell.

Eric, I get 5 to 7 years out of a reel, BUT I don't fish nearly as much as you. Nor do I have clients using my gear. Just me and the wife. I have done the math, and for my situation, if u can get 5+ years out of the cheaper reels I'm coming out well. The only time I spent big bucks on a reel, the same summer I stepped on it and smashed it to pieces.

Well my decision was just made for me. Happened to find a combo fenwich elite tech/ pflueger supreme for $159 shipped to my door. Considering its a $150 rod, I got the reel for free.

I think a fine reel is like a fine gun...I don't necessarily NEED it, and economics probably don't support the decision to buy...but at my stage of life I appreciate the silky smooth and rock solid feel of quality toys...if and when I can afford to buy one. I have thrown away every Abugarcia reel i ever bought or was given (most were $50 or less...you get what you pay for, and many of those wore out in one season). Love my stradics, though the Symetre's do the job just as well...

It is the 6'6" ML rod vs the 6'3" M i was originally going to order, but considering i already have a 6'3" M in another rod i decided to give it a try, beggars can't be choosers

I just use the $50 Abu Garcias from Scheels or Walmart. I really like these, they are smooth and work great.

Report back on the smoke PTi reel please. I ordered one back in November and it was on back order for a few months so I just cancelled the order and bought a Ci4 for my rod that gillgetter is making me. Still might buy a smoke though so a review would be swell.

I wanted to wait and give a complete report on these reels after a summer of use but I will give you my initial reviews.

Smoke reels well worth the money. Smooth, strong, long casting, no issues but I have not hooked anything big. A lot of small walleye and pike. I bought two of the 30's and wish I would have bought one 25 to see if there is any difference. I have both paired to Smoke rods, one is on a 6'9" XFAST/ Med Hvy with 10lb fluorocarbon. The other is on a 7'4" XFAST/ Medium with 20lb PowerPro. Both reels perform excellent and I haven't decided if I care for one rod over the other yet...Time and this summer will tell.

...And just in case there are some fisherman out there that don't want to pay over $150 for a reel I also picked up ( as stated before) the Quantum Kinetic PTi in 10, 20 and 30 sizes. I have only used the 10 & 30 and both are awesome reels. For $99 they perform spectacular.

I put the series 10 on a Fenwick HMG 5'6" Ultralight/ med action and took it fishing at Davis Dam for Largemouth Bass, Trout and Bluegills. I put 6lb fluorocarbon on it and had a blast fishing. Reel and rod performed flawlessly and had some good battles with some hungry trout and bluegills. I only caught two small largemouth males...I think they are spawning.

On the Kinetic PTi 30 I put on 20lb PowerPro and mounted it on a Fenwick HMG 7'0" Fast/Heavy pole. It has landed a bunch of fish in the Tailrace and worked perfect. Casts stickbaits a mile and handles cranks with ease.

I would recommend any of these reels from Quantum and the rods I have mounted them on. Heavy use over the summer might change my mind but as of right now they are worth the money.
