GM said it will focus on its four core brands - Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC - with Pontiac coming to an end next year. At that point, GM said it will offer a total of only 34 different models, down from 48 in 2008.

The Detroit giant also said it would phase out the Pontiac brand by the end of 2010, reduce its dealers to 3,605 from 6,246, and cut its workforce to about 40,000 from 61,000.

hhhmmmm....maybe their getting the point that quality over quantiy is the way to go...

For US auto makers have been playing catch-up, it seems their response is always more models...I have not been a fan of the Pontiac line since the mid-80's...I really hope this helps GM

Stay tuned, more to come and more going away,

BTW,The quality has been there for quite sometime, its hard to make a come back after dropping the ball as long as they have,GM became to compalcent over the years, now with the chap 11 restructuring looming in the near future, the new CEO is making cuts where they need be and don't be surprised if buick folds... Chevrolet and Cadillac is not going away. It'll get more interesting if GM does file chapter 11,"what will the UAW do? all of the long term pension will be gone, factory workers will either loose their jobs or keep working for lees money and benifits.

How long is quite sometime? I know you’re a GM man but you have to face reality...
Where do I start: Sunfire= junk, Trans Sport and Montana = junk, Grand Am and Grand Prix only about one out of every three was reliable, the Bonneville wasn’t a bad line not without it’s problems but that 3800 was a good engine then they go and discontinue it. I’m not sold on the G-series yet either and the Torrent come on we need another cross-over like another hole in the head…Pontiac has been doomed for sometime it just goes to show you how poorly run GM has been for the last decade which all adds up to it’s current situation…The company was just to big and diverse in a shrinking market. I am a Chevy man but Ford is holding its own mainly because it has kept a smaller product line.
If Pontiac would have folded when Olds did it may have been enough to save GM.

Actually I'm a chevy truck guy yelow, this is where the quality lies for the most part, however the impala and the new malibu is doing great,no worries plus they all have the 5yr/100k powertrain warrenty, the malibu goes toe to toe with the camery any day for 2k less and have been doing great. Also the 3800 has'nt discountined, just been re-engineerd "3900" more Hp,better mpg's and is bullet proof.Good point about old's and pontiac, but who knew back then what was about to happen.

What we in business have been lead to believe is a complete new car line, cars and trucks with a lower price point across the board and most of all better fuel economy.

We shall see, looks good on paper.

Grand Am and Grand Prix are not reliable??????

I have a 2000 Grand Am with 185,000 miles on it and have made no repairs to it besides a new fuel pump....I would call that reliable...

I had a 2000 Grand Prix that I put 80,000 miles on with no problems...I still wish I would have never sold that car...I loved the 3800 motor in that car....200hp and it got 30mpg on the highway...great car..

Like I said whitetailhunter one in three you were lucky...the pontiac's I've had owned and my friends have been junk...head gaskets going out and tranny's not mention the countless interior and electronic features that jsut decide to stop working or break...the pontiac line has been a "cheap" line in my opinion for some time -- really ever since they went to the "wide track" line up it seems the quality went down hill.

I agree snow cadilac adn chevy are GM's bread and butter and although the quality of Chevy has been up and down over the years GMC and Caddy have pulled them through...I remember the Jimmy vs Blazer you could just feel that the Jimmy was a little better made.

Snow do you know the tottal number of GM employess that have been laid off?

I drove GM products up to the mid 90"s and just got fed up with the quality and the pricing.   I hope they can regroup, get the price down, and make a good product.

Snow do you know what they are going to do with the dealer ships that will be terminated??      You might suggest converting them  to wholesale gun shops and reloading supplys.  Maybe sell bows and fishing gear also.

Must of been in your head because it's really not possible for you to feel a difference in indenticle platforms.  GMC and Chevy trucks have been exactly the same since day one.  You may have been able to get a different option or two but everything from quarter panels to drivetrains were and always be the same exact thing.  I've never understood the Chevy/GMC split since they both come out the same door from the factory.  Please don't bring up cosmetic differences between the two because since 1973, there haven't been any.

Mod1220,

Actually there have been some cosmetic differences since 1973.  Different grille styles in the early/mid 90's.  Late 1990s early 2000s different side molding.  I personally liked the GMS grilles and side molding better than the bowtie.

Thee may have been more, but those are the differences i can put money on.

YES, I am that foolish!

Just look at the rear fenders on the two that you posted. The Chevy fenders come up higher, runs back almost to the tail light,  and are more squared off. I would say that is a difference.

G33,

Its hard to keep up on jobs lost, actually its mind boggling, what is about to happen will be a major ripple effect that will last for quite sometime.Dealers that shut the doors (like my dealer two years ago) will either merge like us or lock the door and walk away which is happening all over right now.My plan is to ride out the storm, single and very little overhead except for my golden  But he's low maintainence, besides I'm to young to retire and to old to start something new in life.

Tim

Oh,and "yes" the only difference between GMC and Chevy is a few cosmetic features like the grill and hood and also the aluminum wheels.

PS~ The reason the lines are different on the two pics posted is because the chevy is a 1/2ton and the GMC IS A 2500hd (note the 8lugs on the GMC) THE 1/2 4X4 has 6 lugs.

Sorry Snow but the fenders are different from Chevy to GMC half ton to half ton. Here are some links

Huge difference on both front and rear fenders

Here is my take on it...If a GMC and Chevy model are made at the same plant they are not made on the same assembly line so here's what I think...all the newbies (you know 1-5 yr employees) work on the Chevy line, while the more experienced workers (say 10-20 yr employees) get to work on the GMC line....I don't care what anyone says there is a quality difference between GMC and Chevy.

fire,I'll take your word on it,whocares? its just cosmetics like stated above, everything beneath the body is the same, some folks like the lines of the GMC,some like the chevy's,resale, trade values are the same.

I would like to see just one GM truck line period, come up with a new name if they have to and move on.

The fenders may look a little different but I guarantee that they're a bolt on swap.

I thought Cadillac would go before Pontiac.
