I been getting in shape for hunting and just in general.  Just wondering what type of thread mill to get for those days when a person doesn't want to go out and jog.  I want something with different programs ans something easy for my wife to enjoy.  Don't want to break the bank willing to spend less than a grand.

imho, dont run just walk especially if you are over weight.     Unless you want to destroy your knees and hips.

My wife and I bought the incline trainer.    It will absolutely kick your a$$ without running.
yeah it is a little more expensive than some others but after doing some research I came to the conclusion that spending a few hundred more on a good unit will pay off in the long run.

WHEN I do actually go to the gym I usually start out with just walking on a pretty good incline.  It seems to do the best because it works the muscles you use when walking up hill.  I know some might give you dirty looks but bringing in a backpack loaded with a normal day's hunting goodies would be a good idea too.  Soon I will be doing that once I get moved into my house.  Or I might just walk the hill close to my house.  Might be the easiest actually.

I run from time to time but I hate running.  I did it for 10 years in high school sports and a million miles during wrestling.  I cannot even stand it anymore unless it is because I am chasing after  rogue rooster, the dog, running to a hill to see one more glimpse of a deer, etc.

That and yeah, the joints, etc.  Oh and I swear I am going to break the dang thing when I come down on the treadmill when walking.  Ha ha!

Seriously though, I think walking is one of the better ways to get in shape for hunting.  That is, if you use the incline.  Then of course some weight lifting.  Just stuff to get the body ready or the muscles ready to handle a good days work.

I just bought a Nordic Track for $649.  It is usually marked
at $1000, so the price was right.  I just flat wore out my old
one.  I had a Pro Form, and it is a good machine, but I've
already replaced the walking belt and the motor belt and
now the front main roller is out, so it's pretty much done.
I like the Nordic Track because it does have different speed
settings at one touch and in has several incline positions
at one touch.  Like everyone has said, the incline on these
machines will kick your ass but it will get you in shape.  But,
you have to be willing to get on them at least 3 times a week
and you have to go for 3 - 4 miles starting out.  You have
to commit to it otherwise it's gonna sit in the corner and collect
dust.  I do at least 3 miles a day, every day, because I need
it and it feels good.

Good luck to you

Any type of exercise is better than none at all.

As with anything, the more realistic your training is, the better you will do when it's time to "go for real".

Actually, I also have a scwhinn airdyne and that fricken thing kicks my arse worse than running!!  I have dubbed it "The Bike Of Death".....

Make sure you spend a few bucks on a good pair of walking/
running shoes otherwise your feet will get really sore.  Once
your feet are sore, it takes awhile before you will go back on
that treadmill.

OH I once used to think that.....emphasis on "think".

I've found that some days it's hard to get started, but then after I start I feel so much better.  Exercise is just like anything else, you have to WANT to do it and pretty soon it just becomes part of your routine.

You don't have to train for a marathon or anything either.  30 minutes of moderate exercise, 3 to 4 days a week is all it takes and you'll feel soooo much better after just a few weeks.  It can be life changing.

I started 2 months ago running and lifting and am finally starting to feel and see the results a bit. I usually hit the treadmill 3 days a week then the other 2 days I lift for 3 sets and finish with a short but hard run. Good running shoes made a world of difference! I usually run for 30 minutes at grade 1 then put the incline to a grade 9 and walk through that till my quads are burning. I work out over my lunch break so time is limited but it sure helps!

Diet is just as important as your exercise habits.  This doesn't mean you have to eat salads everyday, it just means that cutting out "bad things" little by little can make a huge difference.  It doesn't do you much good to workout and then go eat like a pig.  What you eat and how much of it is huge!  Like they say, everything in moderation.

Well, according the "Old Gunny" on the TV, Marines
do nothing but kick ass and take names, at least
that is what he is saying.  Sad but true, I've seen alot
of Marines bleeding just like the rest of us.

And you are right, everything in moderation, well
ALMOST everything!

Yup again.  Exercise is just that.  Exercise.  But if a person truly wants to see physical results he or she has to cut down on the unnecessary grub.  I like chicken wing...

Argh.  Life was so much easier at age 18 - 25.

What kind of shoes do you health nuts wear to work out.  I can still see my willy, but it is getting more difficult.....I may need to start up a regimen again.

I went with Asics for running. So far I like them. Took a few pairs to find what size and style works for me though.

Asics are one of the probably 3 brands that you should wear for walking/running. A lot of them have done better in recent years but your feet will thank you.

Also, you can get some pairs of them for 40-50 bucks but those don't have the best orthodics etc that they offer and won't do you much good in comparison to the other brands. Spend a good 80-130 dollars on a pair of shoes and your feet will not get sore.

My wife is a nurse and spends a lot of time on her feet and she can attest, she used to wear shoes she thought were "pretty" until I got her into a pair of asics and now she won't even put the other ones on.

Also, big thumbs up to the moderate exercise and just cutting back comments. You don't need to go until you feel like you can't every day but a getting your heart rate up for 30 mins a day will do wonders. I like to walk for say 10 minutes, jog for 5, walk for ten again etc. Also walking/running on pavement and sidewalks is going to be a lot harder on your feet and joints also so if you have an area where you can exercise off those it will be better.

If you have a pop or 2 a day try cutting back to only a few times a week and a little exercise and you'll be amazed. Just take little steps and try not to get discouraged if you don't see "instant" results. Your body is feeling the difference even if you cant see it.

Good thread!
