I know that I do!!  Wasn't able to make it out there last year but I have leave in the books for this year.  Only been out there one time and that was 2 years ago, didn't get anything but had a blast!  Can't wait.  Hope the rivers have gone down by then.

I have been thinking of trying it for the first time but it would be quite a drive and you never read or hear much about it. Weres a guy go and what do you use? Would my eight foot cat rod be heavy enough?

You typically should be using a 10-12 ft surf rod, 35-50 lb line, 4-5 oz weights, and a pretty large treble hook 8/0 or 10/0.

Put the hook on the end of your line and tie the weight onto the bottom of the hook with about 18-30 inches of heavier line (a person loses a lot of weights if they aren't careful).

Toss it out as far as you can and rip it back towards you.

Only place to legally fish for paddles in ND is the area west of Williston from the Highway 85 bridge to the Montana border.  There is a closed stretch of river in there as well, so get a map that shows you what is open to fishing.

Season starts May 1st and goes until the NDGF says enough have been caught (about 850) or until June 1st.  It isn't nearly as much fun as it was 20 years ago, but still a good time.

I used a cat fishing rod my first year and well its really hard on gear. U can buy a nice setup from Scenic Sports for about 125 if i remember right. I would get a 10 foot rod over a 12 foot.

I used a Cabelas King Cat rod and reel for a few years and caught several fish on it.  My biggest was a 73 pounder.  My son then used that same rod for a few more years anc caught his 56 pounder on that same rod. That same rod is still in service to this day except that I upgraded the Reel on it to an Okuma a couple years back.  The rod seemed to hold up very well.  The only thing I really needed to do differently is use 3 ounce weights instead of the standard 5 ouncers.  The heavier weights were to heavy to cast with the limper rod and didn't seem to hamper the fishing at all.  I prefer to use a heavier rod but the King Cat rod will work.

My son and I will be out there The 5th through the 9th.  We need to find a new campground though.  We always used to camp at Trenton Lake to get away from the crowds at the pumphouse and confluence, but the last few years it has been getting bad at Trenton.  I am getting tired of the drunken screaming party until 5am crowd that has been there lately.  Anyone know of any smaller out of the way campgrounds in the area?  I don't care if they have any water or electric - just a place to pitch a tent without worrying about the stupid crap.

Wheres this Scenic Sports at, Williston? Is there any place there or Bismark were a guy could get an up to date report on how its going or a little insider info on where to go? Its quite a drive across ND for me and I'ld hate to make a dry run if I dont have to.

Scenic Sports is the only sporting goods store in Williston and is found on the eastern edge of town on 1804.

Scenic also has a website, just google them.  They are good  at keeping up to date on how things are going and posting it on their website.

My personal favorite for fishing poles is the 10.5 ft Ugly Stick.  Been on the same one now for about 11 years, although I have probably missed 3 of the past 5.

Oh yeah, definitely looking forward to paddlefish.  Got buddys coming from Grand Forks for the 6th-9th and it should be quite the show.

Scenic sports website is http://scenicsports.com

Without a doubt, coming out into nature is one of the neatest things there is to do, but you also have to be careful. That’s why I always try to pack the heat — try to pack a gun. Just a little bit — pack some heat. Now this isn’t too — this isn’t much of a big boy, I don’t want to kill the animal, but I do want to warn it, and say “hey, I think you’re pretty neat, but I respect your distance.” There’s bears out here, there’s mountain cougars, and biting goats.
