I just take a normal net add three pieces of wire on each side and add something inside the net to weigh it down so it goes under water like a piece of metal pipe. Works alot better then those milk crates those can be hard to get a fish in.

I have seen all kinds of homemade jobbies. From crates to buckets to nets. What JJ59 said is probably the best way to go especially if you hook into something big. I have used a bucket with holes drilled in the bottom with some rocks in it. It worked but wouldn't want to be stuck using it if I caught a whopper.

I would have to say the best is to get a 10 speed bike rim and some sort of laundry bag.  Connect the two and for the handle, use some sort of wire connected to a rope.  On the handle, have two point of contacts on each side right next to the rim.  Usually throw a rock or something in the bottom when fishing to weight it down in the water.  Works great, have brought up 10 lb Northerns with this type of hoist net.
