Garrison Dam Tailrace - Sunday, August 28, 2011
Report Details
First time out to the tailrace yesterday and had a blast even though the fishing was slow. Didn't have any idea on how to fish it so we just started pulling cranks in the honey hole down the east side of the river and back. Had one good fish on in 18ft on a large silver bomber crank but it broke the line, I am pretty sure this was a salmon hit. Later in the mornin around 11 I hooked into a 9lb salmon using a large gold walleye diver in about 22ft where we were coming up a ledge onto a sandbar. What a rush that was! As I was cleaning it I talked with a couple local guys and they said once you catch a salmon you are hooked for life and I think that is the case! Saw a few walleye caught and a couple nice salmon but the most I heard about was 5 eyes in a boat.

Re:Oh yeah once you catch a salmon you are with out a doubt hooked, especially when you catch one on a medium/medium fast rod you use for walleye fishing. I haven't caught one from a boat before using downriggers and such, but in the fall I go up to try my luck from shore at various spots where the salmon run. I have only been trying from shore for 2 years and was only successful my first year in which I caught a nice 7 lber and let me tell you that that fish fought harder than any other fish I've landed, even harder than some of the biggest pike I've caught. |

Re:Tell Greg they're biting and hop in his boat. Labor day weekend is when the lake turns and the salmon start running shallow and can be caught without downriggers. tailrace water temp is 68 so she must have turned or be turning right now, so this weekend shoud be able to get em from shore on sakakawea.
