Wildlife disease spreads in Wyoming
Wildlife disease spreads in Wyoming
Posted: Wednesday, November 17, 2010

Chronic wasting disease, a fatal neurological disease of deer, elk and moose, has been discovered in deer hunt areas 119 and 124, bringing the known total of CWD areas in the Big Horn Basin to 13.

A white-tailed buck from hunt Area 119 was confirmed CWD positive by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department's wildlife disease laboratory in Laramie on Nov. 15. The animal was killed on Nov. 7 on the LU Ranch south of Meeteetse. Hunt Area 119 borders deer CWD endemic Areas 120 to the south and 127 to the east.

In the second case, a mule deer buck taken on Nov. 1 about six miles southwest of Greybull has tested positive for the disease. Hunt Area 124 borders deer CWD endemic hunt areas 122 to the north, 125 to the south, and 51 and 47 to the east. Hunt Areas 51 and 47 were also added to the list this fall. The disease is now known to occur in basin deer hunt Areas 37, 41, 42, 46, 47, 51, 119, 120, 122, 124, 125, 127 and 164.

Although scientists believe that CWD in an infected animal can be transmitted to humans, hunters are advised not to eat infected animals.

There is no person on earth to blame CWD on and be able to prove it originated from them (or there) with absolute certainty. I find that a mystery in itself. With TSE it can be traced to a critter that was born on such and such date in BF Egypt, Hard to keep production records for wildlife though.

Lots of speculation and information that it started in Colorado in a captive wildlife (not farmed wildlife) facility. Since then the Prions that are believed responsible for CWD have been studied extensively and there has been research that “speculates” that they (Prions) may be naturally occurring in certain soil types, could be but in the science community “absolute certainty” are a couple of big words and not thrown around lightly.

I don’t remember ever saying that anyone in particular is to blame for CWD. All there is is anecdotal and statistical evidence that there is any correlation between CWD and any HFH industry, again probably because of record keeping.

In the wild, I am sure CWD just walks across the political boundary. Bottom line is that once you get it established it is very difficult, possibly impossible, and costly to try to get rid of it. Mother Nature , if you believe in the concept, is going to rule us like it or not.
