Fuel for the oilfield hater's fire...

The wife and I were out at the confluence of the Missouri and Yellowstone rivers last Saturday checking out the flooding affects/catfishing etc.  We slipped just off the main Missouri channel into some flooded backwater and came up upon quite a mess.  For several hundred yards the old flooded shoreline was covered in brown crude oil and slicks down the whole stretch.  Bringham and Zenergy have wells within 1 mile of the area that were submerged with water.  I'm guessing they sent no one to go check around for contamination???  Take in mind, i'm a Williston business owner and a strong proponent of the oil industry, but this is BS.  I've fished and hunted here my whole life and am really disappointed in this.

Is this confined water or flowing ?    I have an area of a pond where the water trickles through a beaver dam  that looks like this and there is not an oil well or a house in miles.  What I see at our place looks just like oil slick but I assume it is bacteria.  Just sayin

Backwater just off of the main Missouri river channel.  It is connected by a 30' wide inlet.  I believe it is crude, smelled fairly strong and shines on the surface.  It was flowing through the channel until about 10 days ago, now its cut off besides the inlet.  I've seen bacteria look similar to this as well but this was different.

i know for a fact that that area was flown over by the state as well as boat trip checks.  this was done weekly by both the state and oil companies.

Hush- thanks for the info, this area could have been hidden/missed by fly-overs?  or it very well could be bacteria that I have never witnessed in my life-have a though time believing that however.

When I look at the dirt banks on the first 2 pictures it looks like it does have a sheen on it,  It very well might be oil.

Take a sample, or did you take a sample of the water? If you can get something to me I can get it tested in the lab here at NDSU during my research hours.  Even if it is soil near the area, let me know what you can get and we will figure something out.

Sounds good. I will be in the Minot area this weekend, and next weekend. So if meeting up works for you we can get together. Otherwise I will talk to my professor and maybe we can get something sealed up good and in the mail.

before you jump to conclusions did you ever think it could have been from the pipeline rupture west of Billings?    Did you report it to anyone?

No, I have not reported it.  Unsure of who to report to.   With the whole floodplain south of the confluence completely submerged with over 12 feet of water,  I suppose oil from the Yellowstone spill 300+ miles south could have pooled here.  However, this spot is up the Missouri the better part of a mile...

Even if it is from that spill. The company needs to be doing better checks on pooled up oil from earlier spills. If that is oil, this is sad, especially coming from a bigger oil company in the area.

Yep if its oil turn it in and make em clean it up,    Someday the oil  will be gone from the depths and all we will have to show for it is rivers that look like this.  EPA is our best friend right now,    Keep up what you have out there because it can't be replaced

701-328-5166 is the number for the ND Dept of Health's Division of Waste Management.

They should be interested in something like this.  Talk to either Curt Erickson or Scott Radig.

I would guess it's from the tank that pulled loose down on the bottoms below Trenton a few weeks ago.

Div of waste dispatched someone, still waiting to hear back!  I closed on a home yesterday and have not had time to return until Sunday.

Eyexer this was nowhere near the Trenton tanks...it was at the confluence if you read my story.  I saw areal photos of the Trenton tanks and the slicks of those were flowing east,  I was 9 miles west of there.
