From the Arm Chair

Bill Mitzel had these in his magazine -- and I will put a plug in for him ---I like his magazine

Sales of Fishing Licenses - ND
2000     Resident 87,799  NonRes 33,586
2009     Resident 69,652  NonRes 37,636

The numbers of residents has been on a steady decline.  Nonres are up and down for example 008 had 30,723 NoRes licenses sold.   Is that a direct reflection of the fishery?   Whats your thoughts?  2010 has to be better?

Now to the fish caught last year:

Sak --- 160,000 caught 116,000 kept
ND Oahe - 470,000 caught 370000 kept
SD Oahe 440,000 caught 292000 kept

Anybody have the creel info on Devils Lake?

signed the Arm chair biologist.

It may have to do with gas prices as well, maybe in 08 a lot of people did not travel too far as gas prices were high, then when they went down in 09 people decided to take a trip as well. I may be wrong,  but I think that is when gas spiked.

As for the spike from 2000-2009, I think the state of ND started to spend more money on tourism advertising, there was an article not too long ago posted on here on how much money they spent on advertising vs how much money was spent on tourism in the state.

The decline in license holders was steady throughout every year.   My thoughts was the demise of sakakwea? But even that didnt make sense.

Sakakawea is a very big draw.  Yes, the demise of the lake causes issues.  If it wasn't for Devils the numbers would be worse.  Sakakwea and Devils Lake both offer superb shore fishing for anglers who do not have the best of equipment or boats.  With Sakakawea on the rebound I'd suspect the numbers to go up a bit.  I also would expect the numbers of NRs to decline.  Unless a lot of NRs are rich.

Also, what about the oil boom?  And other population growth in the state?  Many do not declare residency so they might be the folks contributing to the NR increase.

How about three winters with almost no fishing because of the crappy weather?

Wow, the variables and angles one can look at and assume affects that data are endless.  good information, thanks for sharing.  it would be cool to see more details like what states the non res liscences came from and the age goups etc etc.

All I know is I am looking forward to the next 5 years of stellar fishing on sakakawea.  Not just for walleyes, but I think were going to see some great smallmouth, salmon, and pike fishing very soon, maybe even a boom in the crappie population with all the flooded trees and increasing shallow water forage.

The good ol' days are almost here...it's going to be epic!

The fishing at Devils Lake has changed radically in the last decade.  Maybe i'm using the wrong terminology but I will say it has matured.  Here's what I mean:

Ten years  ago, you could go anywhere on the Minnewaukan Flats, drive into the wind as far as you wanted, shut the motor off and drift until you hit the opposite shore.  All you needed was a jig and a bucket of leeches.  Maybe a bottom bouncer if it was windy.  YOU CAUGHT FISH ALL THE WAY ACROSS.

Try that now and you won't catch anything.  The fish are relating more to structure now and you have to find them.  It's called Fishing now and you have to be able to do it.

I won't even get into the Perch discussion.  That's a whole different story.

Could it be due to lack of maintenance stocking (oh oh here comes the arm chair out)  --- no stocking has been done on the west side since 2000; 2005-2006 they did some on the east side - then they ended stocking DL.   Now the lake relies on natural reproduction.  What would it hurt to stock a lake like that --  growing and growing -- this armchair only sees postives from stocking and no negatives.   What do you think?

I'm all for stocking too but one has to concider that if you get too many fish in a system they tend to stunt out regardless of the available food.  And you could wind up with a lake full of nothing but 15" adult walleyes.

I'd assume that might be one of the factors as to why the game and fish quit stocking Devils.  They felt that the population was already maxed out for quality, not just numbers.

They quit stocking because the lake is like many in Minnesota where natural reproduction excels.

Not exactly.  They quit stocking because it was determined that the lake could finally suppport natural reproduction.  Prior to that time, they were FORCED to stock because the salinity was too high to support natural reproduction.

Time will tell if it actually excels now or not.  I'll give the experts some leeway on this question.

the kind of numbers they were putting in on an annual basis -- mere maintenance stocking for a lake that size.   I dont think the risk of stunted fish exists -- look at em when you catch them -- they are missing a meal.
