Anyone ever use a Fram Air Boost or any other cold air intake? Wanna get more power and hopefully better gas mileage.......
have found on most units,you can make as good
of one by your self.they are not that sofisticated.
buy the screen end at any parts store,attach to
orig.intake tube,knock out baffles in intake tube.
KN filters makes a good air intake, had it on may old Suburban helps if your pull'in things too, couple that air intake with flow master exhaust, or even another top end brand, and you could see 5+ mpg.

Do the K&N filters trap as much dirt as the stock paper filters. I'd like to do one but am scared about fine dirt and sand getting past. I Do alot of gravel driving during hunting season.

No, they do not! Just search the web a bit and you'll find people who have ran blackstone oil analysis before and after trying these "Highflow Air Filters".
In the end there are only minimal power or fuel economy gains to be made on any modern gas engines with no forced induction (turbos or Superchargers) by adding air intakes, chips, exhaust or any of these advertised bolt on products. If you have a diesel, well that's an entirely different discussion (directly due to the forced induction).
Personally you'll never recoupe what you pay for these items and most times they do more damage then good.
K&N air filters work great, although if you look at study after study, they all state that regular paper filters out particulates the best. Now if you keep your K&N clean, and oiled properly it will do a good job filtering as well. I had one on my older vehicle and it made a huge difference. I had it coupled with a throttle body spacer and I got 5 more miles per gallon. Now if those throttle body spacers work
If you run one make sure you don't Over Oil the filter! The oil wil get sucked through the intake and will leave a film on the MAF sensor, this in turn will turn on your check engine or ses light and will show a code stating a lean condition in one of the cylinder banks! Ask me how I know and how much it cost to figure it out!!! On the brighter side once you realize what has happend you can clean the MAF Sensor with a $5 can of electrical contact cleaner in about 10 minutes.
I'm only saying this to save those of you that try these "gaus oil filters" a few bucks "IF" you have this happen.
I have a 2005 GMC Sierra 5.3L. I added an AirRaid Airfilter with the throttle body spacer($280) and also added an AERO Exhaust system ($250). Did it make a difference in the fuel economy, yep it did. Will I recoup my cost, yep I did.
for heavy service(dust and dirt)
run stock air cleaner,change element often.
less damage to engine.
less restriction-more dirt taken in

MissedAgain, Thats almost laughable! Had you said your exhaust system consisted of a set of headers, no cat, a highflow strait through design muffler I may have bought it but for $250 I'm guessing it's a cat back system. I probably sounds great but the performance gain is not even measurable as is the same for the throttle body spacer. Now the air filter you may have made a minimal gain. but unless your old filter was clogged, and the same with your muffler and cat (if you got rid of it) then you will of course make some gains.and JFYI if you can make a 1mpg gain across the board it will take nearly 32k miles to pay for $500 in upgrades with $4.00 gas.
No I'm positive I'm not making any friends but lets seriiously think about this. With todays technology, the rising price of fuel, the CAFE standards that auto manufaturers get fined if they don't meet CAFE set standards for fuel economy, and the and the billions of dollars in research, wouldn't you think that all those automotive experts, engineers, and product development speacialists would catch on to something so simple as an exhaust system and air filter to gain ANY mpg at such a minimal cost! Heck they would do it to gain 1/2 mpg on the entire fleet of manufactured vehicles just lessen the chance of being levied with CAFE fines and not even thinking about a marketing advatage for sales. Certain vehicles with the right custom tune can gain fuel economy but its usually at the cost of premium fuel and some type of drivablity concerns.
You guys can figure it how ever you want from here out and I'll keep my unpopular opinions off the board which should keep arguments to a minimum, lol. I don't want anybody to take anything personal, try what ever you feel is right, I'm just going off of personal & friends experiences with more things that we were succered into than I care to talk about, lol.
Going from GrandForks to Fargo, with no head wind. I got 19MPG at 70 MPH. The fuel I had didn't have any ethanol in it.
