Ford 8.8 rear end

Hello everyone,

I have a 90 f-150, 8.8 rear end. I have been hearing some "clunking" and pretty much grinding noise the last week or so.. I am thinking either the ring and pinion are about done for, or possibly a wheel bearing, althought its not sounding like a normal wheel bearing wear and tear. Took the back cover off and drained out the oil, everything seems tight, no shavings in the bottom, normal wear and tear on the gears but nothing out of the ordinary. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

dont mean to point out the obvious but did ya check out the u-joints? if so it could be that pinion gear bearing as well. make sur to check with the wheels off the ground, its easier to check for play in bearings, gears and U-joints.

Yes sir, u- joints have been checked numerous times. Will check with the tires off the ground tomorrow so i can see exactly where the noise is coming from. Dad also thought it was that inner pinion gear bearing, hopefully not though, looks like a bastard to pull out and put back in.

Sounds like bearing on pinion gear. When you're off the throttle ,rolling downhill , is there a vibration? If so ...thats it.

I have an 06  F150 making strange rear end noises and they said it was the "rear differential clutch paks".  Would cost about $750 to fix but I have't done it yet.

Have not noticed any vibration yet...... but i guess I noticed the noise right away while only driving about 10 mph, and pretty much shut her down within a half mile once I got it back to the house. From the more people I talk to about it, Im about 90 % sure its either the inner, or outter wheel bearings (pinion bearing)   Ill be able to work on it tomorrow and find out for sure. Thanks for the suggestions though, they are appreciated!

My fishing partner makes a lot of noises from his rear end when we're in the boat.   He drives a Ford too.  Maybe that's the connection!
