for bird dog people

For the last few weekends it seams about the same 5 guys call me seeing if there is a seat in the truck available for the weekend hunt.  Of these 5 guys nobody has a trained dog, or for that matter the interest in investing the time and money to get one.  I almost feel like they are bird hunting leaches.  Am I wrong in thinking this way?  Is this sort of thing typical for people with dogs?  Although all of these guys are friends, would it be wrong to turn them down and save seats for those who like me invest the time and money into a bird dog?

Im glad someone brought this up. Every single year the same situation happens to my old man. He has invested hundreds, if not thousands of hours into his dogs. A few guys always ask him if they can tag along. HIs answer is simply No. Sorry. They are lazy hunters, and just want to get a few quick birds. Dad and I have both turned down numerous friends every year because of this. #1, we do not like hunting in large groups, #2 I have been undercut on more than one occasion on the property by a "so called friend". Dont get me wrong, I still bring friends with hunting, but I make damn sure now they have the best intentions in mind.  Too many hunters are lazy these days, and do not want to invest more time or money than they have to, to get a limit, its just easier to mooch off of others. NOW, on  the other hand, do these guys come out pre scouting at all on the property, help you around your house with projects, come over, help shovel snow.... etc?? Then of course, by all means, help them out in getting a few birds.

I have a friend like that.  He asked me along with his buddies thinking I had a good bird dog.  Turns out, she wasn't so good on the day that we went (kept getting out too far in front of us).  He never asked me to go again.

There is a big difference in enjoying watching your dad get a bird up for a friend. Its another thing to completely take advantage of it every chance you get. I too, also love seeing my dogs get birds up and bring them back, however, I have had a few "friends" that only want to go with, because they are too lazy to get off their ass' and find a property that carries birds. They just tag along and never put in any of their own time or work to find new properties to hunt.

That's pretty cold. You make your dad point and/or flush birds for you?

I enjoy taking others out (especially the dogless ones). I do get a little frustrated if they complain about the dogs getting too far in front, especially when they are rusty at the beginning of the season.

I liked my dad's reply when he was taking someone with who has no dog, doesn't hunt much and complains a bit about everything. He asked dad if he had a dog, to which dad said yes. Then he asked (in a less than nice tone) "Well is he any good". Dad just smiled and said "He's better than the dog you brought".

I enjoy taking people out that don't have a dog or that have never hunted behind a good dog. Makes me fell good to see other hunters enjoy the time and effort I've put into mine.

My first post probably came off a bit harsh and self centered. I did not intend it for that. I guess I myself, along with my dad, have had the misfortune of having more than a few people that used, and took advantage of the fact that we had 3 very well trained labs. I also, do love seeing my dogs get birds for people who have never hunted behind a dog before. I just have had more than a few back experiences with people complaining about the dogs getting too far out... etc... and then the next weekend when we come to hunt the same property.... the same guy we took out hunting the weekend before, had 3 pickup loads full of his buddies from out of state with about 5 or 6 dogs.

I don't get it. You would think it would be more rewarding getting birds yourself rather than letting someones bird dog do all the work.

I am actually a avid dog trainer and field trialer. So i think my pointers will meet the standards of most any man.  I just don't like the feeling that i am guiding every weekend.  I enjoy it more when guys bring one of their own dogs even if it is just a gun dog.

I will repeat my post from above.

Why whine about it? If you don't like their behavior get new friends.

Such is life.  Same thing with people who have cabins or boats, etc...do all the work and then people show up expecting to have a gay old time.  You can bite the bullet and accept it or you can put a stop to it.  I love bringing friends with, but I do keep my circle fairly small for reasons stated previously.  I hunt to have fun, a limit matters little to me, and I try to hunt with people who treat it the same way.  I do not expect anything in return, but I guess I would think friends would help a guy out with things when needed.  If the only time you hear from someone is when they want to go hunting, then you may need to rethink your selection (unless they have access to good land ).  The worst for me is when people want to go waterfowl hunting but won't spend a minute scouting and don't own a decoy...
