Anyone ever fly fished the yellowstone, smith or big horn rivers in the bozeman area?  Was looking at going out there the end out July and everything I see talks about guides and fishing from a boat.  Was looking at heading out there and using waders and was wondering if anyone has done this or has any advice.

Do you mean the Big Hole River? The Big Horn is not by Bozeman, but rather East of Billings. You can wade the Yellowstone, I have heard of some good fishing by Livingston, but do not know specifics. The Smith has restricted access to the best parts of it...you need to be drawn from a lottery to fish those. I am not familiar with the Big Hole. However, save yourself some miles and fish the Big Horn. One of the best rivers in the state and a lot less crowded than the uptight Bozeman rivers.

I have a buddy that guided out of Madison River outfitters in West.  I went mid July last year and caught the Salmon fly hatch on the Madison.  It was one of the best fishing experiences of my life.  We also fished multiple other rivers and lakes.  Mostly with drys or nympths.

The Bighorn is a great river but since its on the crow reservation in order to fish it well you need to drift it. Lots of fly shops rent boats, and its not difficult to float if the flows are below 5k-6k or so. (who knows when we'll see that this year) That said, it wouldnt hurt to go with a guide for a day to learn the oars and some of the holes. Only downfall...the river is crowded, no way around it. Some days will see over a hundred boats floating the first 13 miles. If you can look up or down river and not see a boat , its a pretty rare event.
Ive spent a fair amount of time on most rivers between Billings and Boze and south. Two of my favorites are the Main Boulder south of Livingston and the Stillwater. Both rivers offer good access and awesome scenery. I also like the Gallatin and Madison as well. Good luck in your search and drop me a pm if you want any more info.

I lived in that area for six years, I never got into fly fishing much but spent many days on the rivers with my trusty spin caster, my diehard fly fishing buddies loved to give me sh** except for the days i would out fish them, then they said i was cheating anyway let me know ahead of time and i could give them a call and get a report for you.  you are going to want to time it right with the run off or its a waste of time, lots of snow in the mountains yet. Oh and thanks again for the bow parts it shoots great I killed my turkey with it this year cant wait for deer season.
