Flesh Eating Beetles

In the past methods used in preparing skulls have ranged from anthills and fence posts to boiling and manure pile maceration. While these methods do work to remove the flesh and tissue, they can have negative effects on antlers, horns and skulls. Yellowing, cracking and premature aging sometimes results from these methods.
Skull Preparation ~
At Dakota Skulls we use only flesh eating beetles (Dermestid) the natural alternative for all of our skull work. These are the same critters that have been picking bones clean since creation began. They are kind of like God's mini trash collectors, removing every speck of flesh and tissue from your skull in just days!
Degreasing ~
Many of the techniques to degrease while producing a temporary beauty tend to yellow over the years as oils and fats seep from deep inside the bone. Degreasing can often take literally months to accomplish depending on many variables such as age and species of the animal. This is a critical step that is easy to shortcut with no visible immediate negative results. Dakota Skulls uses powerful degreasers and solvents for this process and takes no shortcuts.
Whitening ~
After degreasing and deodorizing, the skull is whitened by the use of professional industrial tech grade peroxide combined with whitening agents that produce a lasting, quality finished product. This gives a deep bone penetrating whiten that will stand the test of time. We do not and will not use low cost-low strength drug store/beauty salon peroxide or take shortcuts in degreasing.
Advantages include:
1. Ease of display as these mounts are slim, light and take
2. Lower cost as no tanning, forms, or painting is required.
3. Longevity-no hair or hide to wear or deteriorate over time.
