Fishing Reel Advice

I am thinking of buying a new fishing reel to replace my current 1 ball bearing reel.  I was thinking of getting the Pflueger Supreme XT, wondering if anyone has had any experience with this reel and if it would be a good choice.  It is a 10 ball bearing so it should be smooth.  Also I heard that if you get them wet the bearings will corrode, wondering if that is true or not.  Any information will be helpful.              Thanks

one ball bearing... does it even work?  i didn't know they made such things.  and i know that sounded sarcastic.  but, i am serious, i didn't know they made em'!  in fact, i am trying to picture how that would work in my mind and i am feeling kind of stupid.  which, of course, can't be fixed (as many have pointed out in the past).

Haha, I would have said the same thing, but im serious it is really a 1 ball bearing, It says "1 ball bearing" right on the side of the reel.  Yes it does work it is just not that smooth. It is only about 4 years old. That is why im looking for a new reel, any suggestions anyone?

I just got one of my Shimano's back from their service center.  I sent it in for a cleaning/tune-up.  2 sets of ball bearings were indeed corroded and needed to be replaced.  Devils Lake water is hard on everything.

I recommend a Shimano or Penn baitcaster or spinning reel.  Both will have stainless steel ball bearings that won't corrode.

Thanks for the info, does anyone know if Pflueger's have stainless steel ball bearings.  If not it looks like I will be getting a Shimano.  I thought the newer XT models by Pflueger are susposed to be anti-corrode, but im not sure.  Horsager, did your Shimano have Stainless steel ball bearings?  Also what spinning model of Shimano do you recommend for use for Walleyes.

I just got a Calais back and still have a Chronarch B @ Shimano being tuned up.  Both of them have SS bearings and both of them corroded.  It was my fault I was freeing up the brake for a little extra casting distance and let the gasketed cap come too far off, leaving the bearing unprotected against the elements.

For a spinning reel anything from the Sedona on up is pretty good.  I've a pretty good stash of the old white Stradics that I think highly of and will be using for quite some time.

Thanks for the advice, I have looked at both the Sedona and the Stradic, both of them seemed really smooth and well built.  I'll have to take a look at them again.  Sounds like Shimano is the way to go.  What kind of Warrenty do they have?  Is the Stradic FI any good? What kind of reel do you recommend for Walleye's.

I would second the Shimano Sedona for a great reel in the $50 price range.  I believe I paid $49.99 for mine back 6 yrs ago and it has never let me down.  Smooth reel and casts great.  The Pflueger reels are also very popular.

"When we step into the outdoors, we have the privilege of standing in the presence of God through the power and majesty of His creation. That makes hunting more than a sport or a hobby. It's a calling to something greater. And that transforms the places that we stand into something more than a cropfield or a pasture or a mountain. It makes that place Hallowed Ground."

All of my casting/jigging reels are Pflueger and have been EXTREMELY happy with them.  When I'm in the market for new trolling reels, I'll be looking at Pflueger for those as well if they have a model that has a built in line counter.  I've owned Shimano, Diawa, Mitchell, Zebco and several other brands but it's going to have to be an awfully good deal for me to move away from Pflueger in the future.  I've had my Pfluegers for 3 fishing seasons now and they've never given me any problems.  They're silky smooth and easy on the wrist.
