pretty tough to justify home made ice houses these days when a 7 X 14 portable that fits in a duffle bag is under 300 bucks.

Agree with you there
they are selling perm house's at the local camper sales lot that are pretty sweet though. If I had the extra cash and the winter wasnt so warm would be an awesome time spending the entire weekend on the lake.

If we're not supposed to eat animals, how come they're made out of meat?

How are those big hub houses to set up?? Seems like they would be a pain in the butt, but maybe not! They are huge though! I have thought about buying one, just for the huge space to fish in! Also, how do they handle in the wind??

My buddy has a hub style house (smaller one) and I know if its real cold, it is a hassle to take down. I think the hubs get frozen and are harder to collapse. He had a couple hubs break. He did get it replaced for free.

I just got the base camp 6x6 thermal 3 weeks ago and me my wife and kid all fish in it easily.  With the big buddy heater on medium it was warm enough to not have a coat on inside when it was 10 with about a 20 mph wind.  I also thought it would be a pia to put up/take down in wind but isnt.  Just screw the 4 corners down pop up and fish then take down is just backwards process i really like it at this point.  Only compalint i have is i let it freeze and the zippers where sticky till it got warm but now i just set it in the shower when done for the night.  Overall i am happy with it got it for 200 it was a demo model at runnings

I can have mine set up in less than 3 minutes.  does better than I ever expected in the wind.  I bring a drill with and quickly dril 3 or 4 holes to hold the ice anchors in place and then use bungee cords to hook to the loops on the walls of the house to the anchors.  very minimal freezing to the ice issues especially if you pre drill your ice holes and then set the house over them to let the water settle out instead of soaking into the base.  a 5X10 piece of high density carpet pad works great for a floor. and just drill the holes around the floor mat so you know how far apart to drill them.

Fish Houses

Name and address or phone number must be put on unoccupied fish houses

Licensing of fish houses is not required in North Dakota. However, the following regulations apply:

  • Any unoccupied fish house must have displayed on its outside in readily distinguishable characters at least three inches high, the owner's name and address or the owner's name and telephone number. Any unoccupied fish house left on the ice without having this proper identification may be removed or destroyed by the Department, and its owner is guilty of a class 2 noncriminal offense.
  • Occupied structures do not require identification.
  • Fish houses may be of any size; however, any structure used as a fish house shall be constructed of material that will allow it to float, and to be readily removed from the ice at any time. Fish houses may be constructed with or without windows.
  • If using a vehicle while fishing, the vehicle is not considered as a fish house.
  • When in use, fish houses must be open for inspection at all times and hooks on doors are illegal.
  • Fish houses may be placed no closer than 50 feet in any direction from another fish house, without consent of the other fish house occupant.
  • Fish houses must be removed from all waters by midnight March 15 of each year. Fish houses may be used after March 15 if they are removed daily.
  • It is illegal to leave fish houses on any federal refuge land or on any state-owned or managed land after March 15 of each year.

Ice thickness is not always an accurate measure of its strength. New ice is stronger than old ice; ice formed by direct freezing of lake waters is stronger than ice formed from melted snow. As a guideline, anglers might consider the following as the minimum thickness for safe loads on ice:

  • 2 inches or less - STAY OFF
  • 4 inches of good ice for a walking individual
  • 6 inches of good ice for a snowmobile or ATV
  • 8-12 inches of good ice for a car or small pickup
  • 12-15 inches of good ice for a medium pickup truck.

I guess burnability is not a requirement.

Multi so you put the ice anchors in and use bungess on the loops in the walls and not in the four corners of the shack.  I was going to try that but with out any snow on the ice this year to put on the base was worried wind would get underneath of the base flap.  The drill is coming with me from now on too.

The drill is awesome and I'll never leave home without it.  use a bit just a hair smaller in diameter than the anchors and they screw right in. yep, I just attach to the loops with some wal mart variety pack of bungees, and stretch em out as far as I can to mark where to put each anchor so it's pulled tight all around.  if there aint much wind I'll just use one anchor on the windward side of the house.

Snow definetely helps for windproofing (or slush) I have had my house in 30mph winds and was pretty nervous but it held up just fine.  I'll probably avoid setting up in 30mph wind again, and when its that windy fishing ain't no fun anyway.  15-20 mph winds no problem.
