Fish Creek Dam - Wednesday, December 7, 2005

Report Details
I think what Tippet (he must be a fellow flyfisherman with a name like that) is trying to say is that trout in Fish Creek are very vulnerable and easy to catch through the ice, and a lot are caught, just to "get a limit" then taken home and wasted. There is something about saying you "got a limit" whether it be pheasants, ducks, walleye or whatever, that feels good and satisfying, me included.
But I personally have heard of people feeding trout to cats, giving them away to others who may or may not eat them, using them for trapping bait, throwing them out, etc. (talked to a Bis garbageman one time who said every year he sees trout and sometimes buckets of perch, or other freezerburned fish and game thrown out. I tried to encourage him to report it, but he didn't seem too interested!)
For most people, trout don't really taste all that great but it sure is satisfying to "limit out"......
Catching trout either in open water or through the ice is a lot of fun, especially for kids! If you eat them and make use of them, great - take 'em home! Even the most ardent flyfisherman has NO problem with that! But if you just want to go and catch fish and have fun, then let them go to grow and fight again.
ND has very few good quality trout lakes, and they would be even better if everyone conserved the resource by recycling trout. So like "Headhunter" says about bucks in his many posts, let the little ones go to grow and get bigger.
