Fish Creek Dam - Sunday, January 27, 2008

Fished Sunday from 9-4. Got 1 ten inch bass. Fished shallow, fished deep, fished the trees, fished the weeds, fished the sand. My fishin' buddy missed 1. Vexilars, camera, GPS, all to no avail. I am formally submitting that it be re-named to Fishless Creek. And, to the slob who had his house right by the spring and left a mess, I cleaned up your mess all except for the M&M bag that was frozen into the ice. Used propane tank, graham cracker box, empty quart of oil, 2 soda plastic soda bottle. You PIG! Oh well, I left it better than I found it.

Nothing on the ice for us, tried everything we could think of. Several groups out there and all reported nibbles but no catch. Did see one small frozen perch laying on the ice as we left, about 4". I didn't think there was supposed to be any perch in there? Sunday was certainly a beautiful day to be out though!

Well, didn't have any crawlers, but went out with waxworms and corn. Had a bunch of nibbles. Really hard to hook -- light bite. My little girl caught a perfect rainbow trout on a plain hook with a waxworm -- about 15 feet depth. Ice is about 10.5 inches thick. There were a lot of nibbles on the corn, but couldn't hook 'em. Nice day. Marked a lot of fish between 15 and 25 feet.

Doc Whopper, where did you get a hold of crawlers this time of year?

Tried Fish Creek for the first time in my life. We used rod/reels and tip-ups, too; in 18-27fow. We used nightcrawlers and slid 1/2 of a crawler over the shank of the snell hook, with one inch of crawler hanging free.

The rainbow came fast and furious once we started jigging and creating a stir. We limited out with 6 rainbows in less than 2hrs. I even caught a trout on my rod/reed with a kastmaster with a 3" snell harness/leader below.

I had a good time and hope to try it once again this year.

Went out on Saturday, no luck...we tried waxies, crawlers and jigging spoons, we tried just about everything...they would show up on the vex and peck but not bite...the ice was about 8 inches...and we were in 12-13 ft of water....we were going to move, but it was a bit cold out...

Went out Sunday morning (today) & casted spinners, spoons and small cranks for a couple hours on west side (out of hte wind) and the dam (where the waves were blowing in). 4" bass was all we saw. Didn't see any being caught by others either. Nice day to be out tho...

The lake seems to be okay. Water level is a lot higher than it was last year. Caught a ton of trout jigging, and caught some nice bass. The bass bandits were there with a tournament. So that was a lot of fun to watch - what a nice bunch of people. Im thinking about joining up next year. As far as the lake making the summer it definetly will. That lake has plenty of water in it and the fish are all healthy.

This lake is in bad shape, folks. It's been so hot lately it's making the aquatic plants take over, the algae bloom and the trout die. Saw about 10 good size trout belly-up near the dock and in the flats last weekend. Nice day on the water, tho. Pulled in a couple of decent smallies on surface poppers in the flats. Even saw a friendly crappie (came right up to the boat) in the cove. Pulled some deep-diving cranks in the deeps near the dam to no avail. I hope this lake survives the summer.....

Anyone catching anything lately? Went today on the boat for only 2 hours pulling cranks and caught 1 trout. Weeds are really taking over the lake.

Walked around to the dam on Saturday this weekend (6/23) in the windy, humid and hot weather. Caught the nicest rainbow of my life (and being from Wyoming where that's about all I fished for, that's saying a lot). This was one of the toughest-fighting fish I've ever caught...took me about 5 minutes to land her. She'd jump, run for the weeds, let me get her in close, jump again, run out....on and on. Finally pulled her in and let the tired thing go.

Caught her on a black and glitter wiggle wart plug, reeling just fast enough to get some cadence out of it. Pretty slow fishing otherwise. Many fish rising around the dam, think they were hitting on the dragonflies, but it was too windy to bust out the fly rig and see. And man is the water up from last year, amazing. All in all, a very worthwhile trip.

Tried the other day and only had a couple bites but didn't land anything. Are the trout still biting?
