Mouth call and/or box call.  Practice calling.  Concealment and no movement is key for them to come in.  They are smarter than they look.

Early season is all about figuring out where the turkeys roost and where they feed. Get a blind somewhere between these two points and set up. Put up some decoys and learn some basic calls-putts, purrs, and yelps. Early season turkeys are in big groups and it is very hard to pull Toms away from all those hens. If you are on there normal travel route you have a high chance of having a close call, and maybe even killing a Tom. Early season is all about knowing where they are and where they want to go. I've been successful with out a blind but it is very tough, although I do like run and gun hunting them without the blind. If you've got a blind or access to one use it, especially being new to the sport. Trust me you will learn alot about turkeys each time you fail. They are a blast and its also a good time to do some scouting for deer as late fall and winter trails are still evident. I like the side profile for the shot, right at the base of the wing. Also, I personally dont change anything on equipment-same exact stuff I use for deer.

I scout as much as I can for a couple weeks before I plan on hunting.  In early spring they move around a lot so the last few days of scouting before your season is when you can pinpoint them.  I set up an hour before daylight and try to get within a hundred or so yards of where they roost.  As soon as they start gobbling I call about every 10-15 mins.  I usually use a lone hen for my decoy, set at about 15-20 yards from my blind.  I too use the exact same set-up as with deer-same bow, same arrows tipped with 100 grain muzzys.  Good luck!!
