Photo Description:
With the nice weather and a 7 year old that wants to shoot, I put the two together today and started her firearm safety education.  With her little 22 in hand, we set up a tin can at about 10 yards and started in.  She did great!  After a little coaching on the basics of sight alignment, barrel awareness, and trigger dicipline, She went 6 in a row after she figured out the peep sights and ended up with 6 hits in 9 shots.  We will definately be doing that again.  I can hardly wait to take her hunting for the first time, but that is a few years away yet.  You can't blame a Dad for dreaming though.

Fun, isn't it?  I had my 8 year old step-daughter plinking cans consistently with the daisy I bought her for her birthday.  It was freezing with high winds and she kept wanting to keep shooting.  I might have to break it out again this weekend.

Not to be critical, but I would have her shooting from a steady rest so she could be even more accurate. This would build her confidence and have her wanting to shoot even more!

The event of the existing crisis will be decisive in the opinion of mankind of the practicability of our federal system of government. Great is the stake placed in our hands; great is the responsibility which must rest upon the people of the United States. Let us realize the importance of the attitude in which we stand before the world. Let us exercise forbearance and firmness. Too cool--start them out right, and young.  They get the itch from their involvement, and are hooked by the fun and excitement!   Good basic training and experience from a mentor, and a life-long bond is formed!   Both with shooting, and YOU outdoors in the field!

yelowjackt.  It's a chipmunk 22 s and lr.  It's a single shot bolt action rifle with a pull type safety system.  It's very light and fits her as well as it can for her growing frame.
It seems to work for her as she seems to shoot it very well.

The different shooting positions will come with time and you are totally correct Meelosh.  Right now however, barrel awareness and general handling skills are the priority.  If the gun is sitting on a table or a shooting rest, she won't learn those skills as quickly.  Once she has barrel awareness and the other basics down pat, we will move into the sitting, kneeling, and prone positions as they relate to the basics.  Holding a weapon while trying to sit down can result in the barrel pointing in some very undesireable directions I'd like to avoid if possible.

I'm no expert in teaching youngsters to shoot.  If anyone has suggestions for me,  I'm really all ears.  I want her to be a much better shot than I am.  Though that may not take to much.  LOL!!

I would say you are on the correct path. I started my kids shooting and handling in a standing position.
