FIRE at whitetail campground area

This is just a little note to remind all of us that we need to make sure that our campfires and firepits are completely put out. On Sunday we were camping at the campground and went on the morning hunt. When we returned to the campground we noticed there was smoke coming from the other side of the camping area. We found the hillside on fire and spreading fast. A quick call to 911 and we started to try and contain the fire as best as we could. We had the fire almost completely contained when the good old boys from the belfield volunteer fire department showed up. Those guys got there unbelievably fast and had water trucks pumping and were soaking the hot spots. The sherriff showed up and after a little investigating determined that someone had dumped hot ashes from a campfire into the tall grass and the 20-25 mph wind got it hot enough again and lit the hillside up.
So if you were hunting from that campground you may be getting a call from the Kidder county Sheriff. He has a lot of info from the other campers and landowners in the area. If you were hunting there or know who was please tell them to be more careful in the future. thanks

Where's the "swift boot to the ass" emoticon when needed?

Because that's what someone should get for being such a dumarse with hot coals!

Glad to hear you guys got the fire out quickly.  This isn't going to be a year to mess with fire as the grasses (note, we actually have grass everywhere this year) begin to cure and we don't get cool and wet mornings with high relative humidity.

Yea, those Billings County Fire guys are top notch, no question about that. A person would hope people would use a little more common sense but I can't say I'm surprised- theirs all kinds out there.

Why would the Kidder County Sheriff get involved?

My brother-in-law started this post and since he is not from the area he mistakenly typed Kidder County instead of Billings County, please forgive him.  I would also like to commend the Billings County fire department and its members for their quick response, I made the 911 call and I would say within 10 minutes there were area ranchers on the scene that are members of the department as well as trucks from Fairfield.  Being a volunteer firefighter myself I know how it is to get pulled away from what you are doing on a moments notice to help out others, it is not always easy.  Thanks to their quick response, the help of area ranchers and other campers what could have turned into a bad situation was quickly prevented.

As Allen stated, we all need to be careful, there is an abundant amount of grass this year and it is quickly drying up and just waiting for an ignition source to get it going.  Please be careful out there when hunting and enjoying the badlands, we all need to look out for each other.

Now if we could have just found a buck for my son to shoot it would have added even more excitement to the weekend.
