When I was in high school in the late 80s we took a trip every year for four years in a row. We went to boundary waters it was awesome fishing. I think moose lake was the first one we went to before going into Canada and it was really good fishing.
you gonna set steel or whistle dixie

I fished the boundary waters 3 years ago this june.  It was a great time.  We caught pike, walleye, smallmouth, bluegills, and perch.  You'll need a few days and a canoe plus good maps and a gps.  I would recommend having another person along also. The two most popular routes are the gunnison and sawtooth if i remember correctly.  I'm sure there are lots of other lakes in that country that you can drive to also.  I bet there's some great ice fishing up there also.  You'll be able to find a lot of information by doing a google search "fishing near Ely, MN". I just tried it and information about several lakes in that area was available.  You should have no shortage of fishing opportunities over there.  Good luck.

I live down in Duluth and spend a lot of time up in the BWCA.  The fish mentioned will be your target.  Vermillion has some great Muskie fishing, there is a decent lake right in town so you will never have to go far.  The waters are normally really stained so prepare your tackle box for that.  I think you will love it up there.  I have heard some of the students like to hug trees a LOT but what do you do.

PS if you have any questions feel free to contact me via PM or at sotaman@srt.com see if you cant get a job with one of the BWCA outfitters up there.

Ditto what sota said, you'll be smack dab in the middle of some of the finest fishing in the country for all species and the scenery and tranquility is that of the canadian wilderness only minutes from Ely~

You'll be somewhat restricted to travel in the BWCA unless you get lucky and secure entry permits early or just fish on the out skirts of the wilderness park.I here chatter about permit rate increases this season, maybe $12/day~

I was the guy who dropped off those pics in the bait shop.  Don't get there anymore because Al Franken has it out for me.

I have gone up there the last two summers. (once in July and once in June) we went up to Basswood Lake and hammered the smallmouths and got into some decent size pike(5 to 9 pounds). The walleye fishing around there is mostly jigs and leeches and alot of slip bobber fishing as this is easier than trying to troll in a canoe. If you like smallmouth fishing I would recommend wind lake between moose and basswood. Portages are everywhere so keep that in mind.

Monster pike comes from the area, infact the state record comes from basswood lake~

The Minnesota state record Northern Pike was caught on Basswood Lake, Lake County and weighed 45 lbs 12 oz.

The only rough fish I've seen in the area streams are white suckers and red horses, all on the small size, never seen any carp.
