 From what Hornady states-- its the "same" as the interlock  (obviously different ojive and BC, but thats beside the point)

I haven't hit an elk with an SST, but many a LARGE mulies.
The 30 cal 180 ssts, driven in a300 win mag hold together just fine.

Essentially Hornady's Ballistic tip.  I've had good luck with ballistic tips (although I've never used them on elk) if you keep their velocity under 3K fps, above that they seem to really come apart.  A heavy for caliber SST from say a 270Win (140 or 150gn_ or 30-06 (165 or 180gn) is likely to preform just fine, in a magnum where you've added say 300-400fps I'd opt for something with more controlled expansion.

This is of course only opinion because I've never actually used them on an elk and am extrapolating my actual experience with Ballistic Tips.

Jokostel and I were typing @ the same time.  Given that he's actually used them I'd lend far more weight to his commentary than my own.

 Id equate them to a standard hornady, only with a polymer tip... they are nowhere near the "softness" of a Nosler Ballistic Tip or a Remington Accutip.

So, Short of cutting around the usual bloodshot meat/sinue-- you'll be just fine if you do your part on the shot.

I shot a 6'4" black bear with a 150 gr SST out of a .308.  Hit the neck and ended up in the off shoulder.  Jacket came apart from the lead.  It damn sure knocked him stone dead, but they wouldn't be my first choice of bullet for an elk.

I shot my ND bull elk this year with a 225 gr SST in my 338 Win Mag. It dropped in its tracks with 1 shot....they work!

 I have mixed feelings on these bullets. I shoot them out of my .270 in 130 gr and they pattern just awesome. These things group on a target like crazy, mickey mouse bullets for sure out of my Ruger..... BUT I shot a deer with them last year and I recovered the full jacket in the opposite shoulder with no lead to be found and the deer ran about 1/2 mile after being shot.

Obviously no 2 shots are exactly alike so it could have been my own shot placement, however when I find my jacket in the opposite shoulder (have to take a pic, its sitting on my desk) and the deer runs that far I get kind of bummed. I plan to shoot a deer with these again in the coming weeks for test # 2

I prefer 115 gr Nosler Partitions out of a 25-06 rem.  Just have to get a bit closer, kind of like bow hunting with a rifle.  Fun stuff!!

Hornady SST is the only bullet I use anymore. I've had nothing but good luck with them. I've killed 5 elk with them out of a 300 win. mag. using 180 gr. SST's, with none of them taking another step. I have found the bullet a few times and it held together well. I reload it in every gun I shoot and have never had anything but good to say about them.
