Elk in E3 and E4

Anyone seen any Elk in E3 or E4? I have a cow/calf tag that I have been trying to fill. I also know another hunter that has an any tag. I have been putting on the miles hard the last month and I have not seen anything. Thanks in advance for your help. Tom

They started showing back up after deer gun season.

You can't aim a duck to death.

When I shot my elk there was a herd up by magpie campground on the state school land and to the west on grasslands.

You putting those miles on tires or boots? Makes a world of difference elk hunting. Generally elk hate disturbance, like traffic and people, and hang out in the heaviest cover as far from anything as they can get. If it's a bitch to get into an area, it's got a better chance of being elky as long as the habitat is good. Then if you get one back in the boondocks it REALLY sucks getting one out. I got one a few years back and it was a 3.5 mile pack out to the truck one way over ten or so ridges. I learned that day, do not hunt elk alone...

I didnt know there was a area in the badlands that you could walk 3.5 miles without crossing a road. Or go a differant direction and walk a mile to another road.

Now I have only been on maybe 10 Elk hunts out there  in the last 20 yrs as 1997 was the first yr in E3 and E4. And there are a lot more roads now than 20 yrs ago. And every Elk we found were less than a mile from the agricultural land. Every Elk shot was a Bull with the best being 7x7 356BC

Relive your memories take a kid hunting and fishing

The Davis ranch west of Amidon complain about Elk knocking down their fences. Might be worth a call.
