I caught a 2.5 lber the other night and thought about keeping it but decided to put it back. I was just wondering if smaller catfish are worth keep or releasing.
If everyone focused on the important things in life the world would have a shortage of fishing poles.

That size would be a great size to eat.

I dont go around guessing cup sizes either I just know a nice rack when I see one.

I fillet directly over the rib cage and back to the tail, pull the skin off and you have a nice bonelss fillet...ready for blackened catfish sandwich.

I usually just fillet from the ribs back, there isnt much meat on the ribs and they are a pain, if you go just behind them back to the tail youll get some nice chunks of meat.

A couple of my post were deleted...

While cleaning your fish, have a large bowl of MILD saltwater at the ready.  Soak your fillets/chunks in the bowl for a couple hours/whatever in the 'fridge. Drain, cover in Mt. Dew and marinate for a good while.  I do the saltwater overnight then the MD soak until time to fry.  I guess Sprite would work too.

Batter and deep fry for maximum heart health.  I like this for all fish.  Lot's of oil on the surface when you drain.

When I am catfishing and keeping my limit. I like to get them in an ice cooler as soon as possible. I just filet them like a walleye. Can fry the fillets or cut the fillets into chunks. It's all good. I don't usually keep bigger fish. There is a nerve or vein down the middle of the fillet. I always trim that out. Makes the fillets slimy when frying and eating not so good. ENJOY
Hunt with your kids, not for them!
