I have two new cabelas drift socks that I have not rigged up with a tow line. One is smaller for backtrolling control and the bigger one is for drifting off the side of the boat. What length tow lines are you using for either situation?

As little as possible is my preference. I keep mine snugged up to the boat, need to know where there are when landing fish.

I have 8-10' on mine but seldom use much line.  Closer to the boat the better for landing fish like others mentioned.  The farther you get the sock from the boat the more it slows you down though, so tucking it up close to the boat when you need just a little tow helps or if it is really windy I let them out further.

I use them everyday out for trolling cranks. I start out with an 11 footer and adjust my length so i have the sock as close to the cleat as possible. I am cautious as to not to get it caught in the pro of my 150.
