ST. PAUL (AP) — The state Department of Natural Resources is investigating the fatal shooting of a cougar in southwest Minnesota.

It's illegal to shoot mountain lions, or cougars, in Minnesota unless they're posing a threat. Bruce Ihnen tells The Daily Globe of Worthington he was finishing chores on his brother's farm in Jackson County's Round Lake Township Sunday when the cougar came out of a grove and ran into a culvert. Ihnen says he called a neighbor and the two chased it out of the culvert and his neighbor shot it.

DNR spokesman Chris Niskanen says it is likely the first cougar shot by a citizen in Minnesota's "modern history." He says the 125-pound animal is being examined by the agency's wildlife biologists in Grand Rapids

No doubt

If we're not supposed to eat animals, how come they're made out of meat?

My question is; if the DNR continues to say there are no cougars in MN, how can they prosecute someone for shooting one?
Just a nice red river cat.

I have been following the preditor thread on here since we had a large mountain lion on our game cam this fall. I find all the comments to be very interesting. I would agree that the big cat population is much higher than we are being told. Please tell me how I can help with this issue.

The cougar just shot in SW MN (near my hometown) was shot by one of my best friends family. I have alot of information on this. They are a great family and will now may be facing criminal charges for their actions. As you can imagine the family is getting accused of alot of things and I am sure they would appreciate any words of wisdom or kind comments. Trust me when I say their intentions were good and they were protecting their livestock and family. I am sure they have never even heard of the SSS rule!!!

well maybe he should have claimed self defense, say the dam thing attacked him. I can only imagine the MN DNR will throw the book at him to try and deter this from happening again since they love the fact we have these damn things around

When we lived in western MT. we were always told there were no grizzlies there.  We had seen a few while elk hunting but they continued to deny it for 15 years or better.  A friend had a 2000 lb. bull either die or got killed and it was dragged over 300 yards and was wedged between two trees.  Black bears couldn't do that and the DNR still denied it.  Look how long they denied cats in ND.  Happens all the time.

I would say your friends are in trouble. They should have contacted authorities first since the cat was held up in a culvert. Chasing it out and shooting it does not sound like self defense to me. Now if the kids were out playing or the cat was agressive towards the men or livestock then by all means shoot and ask questions later!

Not knowing the law is not an excuse. Just pay the fine and move on IMO.

In Minnesota??? I can't find a listing for fines on poaching a protected animal on their website, but if they throw the book at them like many think should be done- it could be alot worse than a little fine.  Thousands of dollars, guns and hunting rights revoked, unable to purchase a gun again, even their vehicle taken away, or maybe even jail time.  Minnesota law is not just a slap on the wrist.  I hope that will not happen. Sad.

Ha- good luck Minnesotans!!!!

This is what the law tells about a big cat in your area.  At least they are being honest. All these quotes off the updated MN DNR website.

1 - "While uncertainty remains, most available information attributes the change to an increase in cougar populations in western states. Increasing populations produce more dispersing cats, particularly when those populations approach carrying capacity. It is difficult to predict whether or when enough dispersing animals – both males and females – might settle in Minnesota and establish a small population."   GET READY- GET EDUCATED

2-  "When opportunity presents itself, cougars may go after farm livestock or pets."  JUST SO YOU KNOW

3-   "If there is a proven public safety concern, or if the animal is caught in the act of killing or injuring livestock, DNR or licensed peace officers can take action or authorize the taking of a problem animal."  YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO PROTECT YOUR OWN PROERTY IN MINNESOTA... SAD!!!

4-  "Will the DNR remove a cougar?

Relocating problem animals usually is impractical because the same problems could occur at new release sites. Due to the transient nature of cougars in Minnesota, it is extremely difficult to capture a cougar based on an individual incident.

Deporting them to western states, where cougar populations already exist, is often prohibitively expensive and can also result in territorial struggles and the death of the released animal."  SO ONCE YOU CALL THEM... IF THEY BELIEVE YOU..... THEY MAY COME OUT AND TAKE SOME PICTURES FOR PROOF AND THEN TELL YOU GOOD LUCK THANKS FOR THE CALL.

My Personal Recomendations Based on the DNR Advice:

IF YOU SHOULD EVER ENCOUNTER THIS RARE (MINNESOTA) PROTECTED SPECIES YOU ARE TO THROW ROCKS AT IT WITH YOUR ARMS UP.  NEVER BEND OVER.  KEEP ROCKS IN YOUR POCKETS AT ALL TIMES, JUST IN CASE!!!  DO NOT EVER SHOOT A COUGAR IN MINNESOTA (EVEN IF ATTACKING YOUR LIVESTOCK OR PET) OR YOUR GOOD NAME WITH GO TO HELL WITH ALL THE LIBERAL CITY FOLKS AND MAYBE EVEN SOME OF THE LOCALS.  IT IS ILLEGAL TO SHOOT A COUGAR THERE- UNLESS IT IS EATING A HUMAN!!! EVEN THEN YOU WILL BE A POACHER BY DOING SO AND YOU SHOULD BE EXPECTED TO PAY THE CONCEQUINCES FOR TAKING MATTERS INTO YOUR OWN HANDS.  YOU ALONE ARE NOT CAPABLE OF MAKING A DICISION IN THIS MATTER.  YOU MUST QUICKLY CALL THE DNR OR TRACK DOWN SOMEONE WITH THE PROPER PERMITS TO TAKE SUCH AN ANIMAL.  THESE PEOPLE HAVE SPECIAL SHOOTING TALENTS AND WILL BRING ALONG A REASONABLY ACCEPTABLE CALIBERED WEPON.  UPON ARIVAL- THE DNR OR SPECIAL PERMIT HOLDERS WILL TAKE NUMEROUS PHOTOS AS PROOF OF EXISTANCE, HANG AOURND THE FRESH KILL SIGHT, AND LOOK AT POOP AND TRACKS IN THE AREA, WHILE THEY ARGUE ABOUT WHO GETS TO PULL THE TRIGGER IF IT RUNS OUT AT THEM.  THEN THEY WILL PACK UP THEIR STUFF AND SAY, GOOD LUCK BUDDIE.... SHOULD BE YOUR NEIGHBORS PROBLEM WITHIN A FEW WEEKS.  GOOD PLAN?

I know this might sound like a "killer" approach but if cats do not have quality habitat in Minnesota to allow a population to properly "exist", deemed by years of "professional" biologists, then why is there an issue with taking a rogue animal??

Are they setting themselves up as the next state who takes on cats and protects them when 100 years prior there was no issue with NOT having them in the state?

I don't know, just an open thought moment.

It's obvious this cat originated from a NDG&F trailer in the RRV. Nobody has actually seen the trailers like they have in other parts of the state, but we know G&F is hauling and releasing mountain lions in the valley, what other explanation would there be for the drop in deer numbers?

You're joking right? I know you've seen the country in northern MN, how could anyone possibly say that isn't quality habitat? If deer, timber wolves and black bear can survive, I'm guessing mountain lions would do just fine also.

There are a lot of opinions about the law thrown around here. I do it too. But if it were me I would quit talking about it, hire a lawyer and really start attacking the prosecution claiming the lion posed a threat to your livestock and family ( which I think it did, just by being there). Nobody should have to have a lion loose on the farm and can't do anything about it. You have a right to defend the farm and its inhabitants.

So tell them to quit talking to the papers and whoever and start talking to their lawyer. Here is a video that might help show how lions are a threat on the farm.

Best advice on this thread so far.
