DIY Caribou Hunt

I have been trying to put together the costs of a DIY Caribou hunt for 2 in the Broofs Range for next fall.

Has anyone been there is the past 2 years and is it possible to do for less than $6,000 a piece?   I think it will take all of that ,if you figure in all the trasportation cost.

The charter flights have gone up a lot.   I have enough light wieght equipment  for the camp so very little will be spent on that.   Thanks

mauser,
i'm actually in the process of booking an outfitter to fly us into that general area next fall for a caribou hunt as well.  we decided on alaska wilderness charters and guiding. $3150/person, 1 caribou.  when everything else such as travel, meals, etc., i came up with $5,500-$6,000. we are flying out of kotzebue as you probably would as well.  i've done a lot of research w/ diff. outfitters and visiting w/ biologists up there so if you have any questions, let me know. there is another guy on this site who works for outdoor connection that has been on this hunt and helped me out a lot with setting up this hunt so i could get you his e-mail also. good luck to ya. i know i can't hardly wait to get up there.

Thanks pp & Don

I spent a lot of time up there in 1971 hunting & trapping and working so I could hunt and trap.  I have been back several time but just to site see and have a few freinds in the Fairbanks area.  There is just know words to discribe the sites of Alaska.
I am taking my son-in-law as he is getting out or the AF after putting 20 years.

I am sure you know the importance of your equipment and the small amout of wieght allowed.   It is hard to believe the beauty of the land and at the same time the danger of the fall weather.   PP sounds like you have done your home work

What rifle are you taking? I will take my trusty 308, I think of anything I have forgtten about I will be intouch.

I can feel the air and smell it right now in my mind, just need to wait until next Aug.

Thanks again   Dewey

PP do know anything about RUST'S Fly ing service out of Anchorage?  The name rings a bell from back in 71 but I was all over the state then.

There is a little difference in prices from 1971 and now about 300%.    Take your bow and get the hell uo there before you get old.

BTW PP your chice of charter plane is a good one I know a guy who used them a couple of years ago.   They watch the weight real close but that is what you want.
Many more safety regs now than in 71.

mauser,
myself and a group of 8 buddies went with Alaska Wilderness in 07. We had an awesome hunt, filling all the tags. Brad is a top notch outfitter. I book trips for him and I sent three groups with him last year also with great success. Whats great about that hunt is he packs all the food and camp gear, so its just waiting for you when you board the bushplane. He has a list on his website of all he supplies and the weight for food and camp gear doesn't count towards your gear weight. I'll be going back next year with my nephew and 6 of his friends. I just can't get enough of Alaska! Email me outdoor@ictc.com , I got any info you need since I've been there myself. I have a few pics in FB. By the way, it doesn't cost anymore to book through me! Thanks, Steve.
Thanks PP

mauser,
I believe Rust's flyin service covers the mulchatna herd unless things have changed.  They used to be based out of lake hood in anchorage.  After visiting with several biologists up there, I decided on the Western Arctic Herd . The numbers in the mulchatna herd have gone way down over the last several years. The Western Arctic Herd is at approx. 500,000 and stable and is a healthy herd with good trophy quality from all that i have heard.  Also, everything I have heard about Alaska wilderness charters has been very positive.

Tim,
That sounds fair if you can get me a good fishing report next time i'm in minot. It's been a disappointing summer for getting out fishing, so you guys are really making me jealous with all the nice photos. Keep slammin the eyes and have a good 1.
