Directv is your better option by far....but you aren't going to get by for less than 70/month of either after your first two years discounts are done...Dish just had a huge fight this year with FSN that cost them 10-20 twins games...not a good thing for them....that is my 2 cents anyway

I have direct tv and I am going to switch to dish because of the excessive cost.  About the only reason I can see having direct is for the Sunday ticket.  my $.02

With Directv you can't get local coverage around here, but with dish you can.   That's all it takes for me.

Jusy my observations as i have direct and my buddy had dish.  1st of all they are both a rip off so were all screwed there.  2nd is the software.  from what i see is direct's software is 100 times faster when scrolling the guide and switching channels.  you never have to wait for a station to pop up when scrolling like you do with dish.  from what i can see after running both the DVR is much better with direct as well.  more options and easier to use.  Now for the sports though. I am not a big pro sports fan but from what i see is the packages with dish are much better for sports and it does seem that direct has somehow managed to tick off some of the networks or local sports teams ie the minnesota pro franchises so they dont get all the games.  so i guess  what im saying if you are big into sports i would probably go with dish.  if your not direct is the way to go.

I just switched to DirecTV, my bill is only $37/month . . . I have 3 outdoor channels and to NFL Sunday Ticket for free, can't beat that in my book. Plus I get all the same channels that I was paying Midco $75/month for.

Well I have a pretty good idea of the area you live.  My folks live in central ND and they originally had directv which was fine, but when state BB or local news comes on they couldn't get it.  They then switched to dish after direct promised them there was no way to get local and dish gave them all the normal local channels.  I'm pretty sure they can get channel 13 out of Minot.  At the minimum, at least with Bismarck channels you still get in-state sports coverage.  Also, you know how KX works.  In the morning both Minot and Bismarck air Joe and Perry and they do a pretty good job on giving full state coverage of news anyways.

I have nothing against directv, I just couldn't stand not getting local weather and news when I live here.   That's my knowledge of it.......good luck!

I have DirectTV, get the Grand Forks channels.  I live 30 miles out of town, sure miss midco.  Midco with internet was one hell of a lot cheaper.  What pisses me off is I get very few football games, the ones I do are not the teams I follow.  Having to pay $350 extra to watch football is outrageous, especially with the bloated price I pay, over $100 per month.  So, I don't get my games anymore.

Just wait until your 7th bill, you will see the raping then.  Also after football season make sure you get rid of auto subscribe for the sunday ticket or you will automatically be billed for it.

Direct TV has promised getting the local Fox station for the last 4 years. They still haven't got it and their monthly bill is much higher than Dish Network. With Dish Network you get all of the local channels including Fox. Here in Central North Dakota you get NBC out of Bismark and KXMC out of Minot. You can also get FSN which carries most all of the Twins games. I have the second channel package from the bottom and pay $40.00 a month. Pretty much a no brainer.

Why the 7th bill? THat rate is locked in for the first year, then it goes up to only $46 the second year, so I'm good. I may keep Sunday Ticket too . . . it's the only way I get to watch the Bears every week, but we'll see. So far so good with them.

FSN dispute is over with dish.

Every channel is HD - not true, but every channel worth watching, including cbs, nbc, abc, fox (can't believe Directv doesn't get locals in hd)

Get the americas sports package. 7 bucks a month. more college football than u can shake a stick at. You get nfl net., and redzone.

Sunday ticket = overrated

Good luck with that, most of their promo pricing goes away after 6 mos, then after a year its even more.  Their advertising lies about prices, they are #1 on the BBB list of complaints.

FSN = Overrated.
College Football = Overrated.

(I'm not serious about the above comments, just making a point)

Sunday Ticket "overrated"? Huh?  It's overrated if you don't like it or aren't into it.   It's not if you like it.  Same with college football, shopping networks, Little House on the Prairie Network, etc

As far as dish vs. direct....

Get the one that has the channels you want (you can look them up on their site), for the least money.  You won't find any exact packages...but you can narrow it down....so you are like "For $9 more with Direct (or Dish), I get this, this, and that....." then ask yourself it it's worth it.

Both have had disputes (VS. Channel, FSN, etc)  in the past, both will have them in the future.

I'd also look at how many TV's you are going to have them on. Will they all be HD?  All DVR's?  If the channel options are a toss up, find out which company will cost you more over the next 2 years with equipement.

I have Directv.   Every couple years...I make a somewhat general comparision.  It seems everything is so close, that it basically doesn't make sense to switch.

I do have locals with Directv---although not in HD like Dish has them in.  I'd imagine do to a contract with Dish?   I'd imagine someday they will be in HD. I also have Sunday Ticket.   I've told myself the past 5 years that I'm going to cancel it. I always end up keeping it for whatever reason.  I'd thiink at some point Dish will get access also to all games and bring the price down...but I've been saying that for the past 10 years.  You don't usually see monopolies like that last that long.

I don't see much difference, as long as you get what you want.  If there is one channel you don't get with one provider....uhhh...there'll always be something else to watch.  Especially with a DVR.  I don't watch much live TV anymore.  It's all stuff that got recorded (except live sports).   So....with a DVR...you'll basically go into TV show debt----the shows will pile up faster than you can watch them anyway.

I'm locked in for 2 years with DirecTV (Year 1 = $38/month savings and Year 2 = $29 savings Vs Midco = $804 in 2 years by just switching my cable to dish). Midco always did the 6 month good pricing crap, then you could never get a good price unless you upgraded. So far I'm really happy with DirecTV.
