If you get to the devils lake chamber of commerce web page you can find out info on most accomodations in town.  As far as the lake goes, get shallow. Swim baits, jigs, or cranks should be productive.  if you are lucky enough to find any water over 50 degrees fishing should be good.  speed is key, keep it SLOW.

I'd try this place.  Nice cabins and location.  They also have their own boat ramp.

I agree with Mr. Mike, they are great people. Can't go wrong with that choice and it's more of a mom and pop, friendly atmosphere. Like staying at a friends place.

Hook,

I would have to completely lend my hat to Jim and Diane at  www.westbayresort.com as this is where i stay also throughout the summer season. They are located on the north west side of the lake. You would be launching directly onto the "Flats", your also at the closest real boat launch in to Pelican for fishing opportunities. Also, if you come in July Aug timeframe and enjoy trolling, you have the Golden Highway at your door step. I am all about helping you find some fish, of course you wont get my Big Fish spots, but if you have a GPS, or a map, we could sit down over a cool refreshing beverage and help you out.

The state shut down the approach to Pelican on old 281, but the approach just south of the Brinsmade bridge is still open.

Woodland Resort is an outstanding place with outstanding service...

And to think, one of the landowners has offered up land access to the state to put a real boat ramp into Pelican and they (state) wont take them up on there offer!! Weird...

The land offered is off the old 281.  With the lake going up and the chance this road might close it could be a bad deal to put money into it.  They are looking at other options.  I think an ideal location would be on the south side of the Mauvee bridge.  Lease some lake access from Mr. Chase and some parking area from the Foss's.

Walynut,

I heard the reason the state wont take up the offer on the free private land is the gradient of the land.  Cant recall for sure, but I believe it is too gradual and would have to be dug out at a huge cost to the state; or it was too slight of a slope making it too long of a ramp to get boats wet enough to float off/on the trailer.

I kinda like the limited access.

Luveyes,

That could very well be about it being to shallow and dont get me wrong, I like the limited access also.

The reason for not moving forward with a ramp at Pelican Lake is likely a little of both reasons discussed above.  Clearly though, the most critical is that Benson County will not maintain old 281 except for a couple parts north of #19 that are vital to local traffic.  The State would never put money into a ramp unless they knew that the road to access the ramp would be kept open.  I don't see that requirement being satisfied anytime soon, if ever.

Limited access is an understatement, and I guess at Minnewauken some days only
one boat launches all day

hookemup,
The common places you will hear mentioned on the west end of the lake include Monkey Ridge, Howard Farm, Patience Point, the Golden Highway, Minnewaukan Flats.  These are all west of Grahams Island.  East of the Island there are the towers, Doc Hagens, Six Mile Bay, Bud Bay, and a whole bunch of others.

As you go farther east there is creel bay with rocky point and military point.  East of highway 20, there are oodles of places to fish.  I don't get over there much but there are lots of names to the bays and popular spots.

I suggest choosing a place to stay, getting a map with the common places marked, and then looking through fishing reports to get an idea where you want to fish.  If your time is limited, concentrate on the popular spots because they produce.  I like to explore when I have the time and have found that places where I never see a boat, seldom produce anything.  I still do it though because I think I just might find a place that nobody else knows about.  Dumb maybe but I keep hoping.
