East Devils lake - Tuesday, July 19, 2011
By: on 07/19/2011 11:28 PM | Add Comment | Post New Report |
Been out here for the last two days.  Spent most time trolling spinners and throwing cranks.  Spinners producing good numbers but all small.  Cranks have given up all the keeper fish.  Kept 6 last night ranging from 16-22in and 2 tonight both at 16in.  Mostly fishing 8-14 foot flats.  Going to try black tiger bay tomorrow in search of some larger fish.  Anyone else out there?  Got two days of fishing left...still yet to find one of those Devils Lake hotspots!

CRB,

I fish Devils Lake on a regular basis. My most steady way to catch fish right now has been pulling spinners/bottom bouncers with a leech. I dock out of Haybale Heights (great campground) and do most all my fishing out of eastbay. Find a point or shoreline and look for the weedline. Pull spinners as close as you can to it without getting all fouled up. That line right now seems to be 12-14ft of water and the weedline is becoming more and more visible from the surface each day now.  There are a lot of smaller fish to pick through but you should pick up some nicer fish if you keep at it.  I have heard guys are still having luck in browns bay pitching into the shallows but have not tried that for a couple weeks now.  Good luck.

I will be heading to Devils Lake on the 29th of July. Have only fished the lake one other time a few years ago and was hoping to maybe get an idea of what depth, structure and cover would be good to target this time of year. Not looking for any specific spots just hoping to get a general idea where to look. Thanks in advance!

Also wouldn't mind knowing some tricks and areas to catch the elusive white bass. Thanks again.

Three out of the top four teams had a big fish.

God opened the day with a dramatic sunrise accented with a western sky moon over Devils Lake’s 6 mile bay. Launch time is on countdown for an 8 am take off. 28 teams have signed up to fish the 2nd annual ND Fishing Challenge and someone is going home today with $2,500 dollars in first place money.

The Fishing Challenge is a supporting arm of ND Teen Challenge, a Christ-centered recovery program located in Mandan. Funding helps keep hope alive for workers, volunteers and most importantly those searching for freedom from addiction.

The workforce behind today’s event is made up of those same people in different stages of recovery, handling everything from coffee to sack lunches, registration to payout. I have been privileged to get to know some and their quest for life is inspiring.

Behind all the fun of fishing is the purpose of ND Fishing Challenge. Sponsorship dollars raise awareness and money. They also communicate a “We believe in you” concern that encourages those struggling to make their first year clean and sober.

We start the day with light winds and the promise of thunderstorms, followed by extreme heat, all compliments of the National Weather Service. They delivered on all three. Lighting kept eyes to the morning sky but the storms missed us for the most part and by afternoon weigh-in, the sun got its chance at us.

Baskets of fish arrived at weigh-in with both delighted surprise and disappointed frustration, a part of every competition. A couple of heavy baskets are already in topping out at 16 and 17 lbs. Several big fish have been weighed in. In fact of the top four teams, three had a big fish over 6!

So the question on my mind is, “How did they do it?” Gett’n inside the head of a money-winning team is like breaking into the bank. First place team member Mike Zaun of SD was an easy target as I caught him off guard using a quick compliment and photo. “Pitching cranks and lindys,” he shot back. Two radically different approaches. That was too easy; he leaves me thinking he was trying to throw me off.

Big fish of the day went to the Anderson team weighing in at 6.4 pounds, securing a 4th place finish weight at 15.4. Team three, Ramberg-Trana weighed in 5 fish at 16 pounds. 2nd place went to team Haberstroh who complimented their 17. 6 pound weight with a 6 pound fish.

First place went, for the 2nd year in a row, to Pat Shields of Grand Forks and Mike Zaun of SD. The team added Pat’s son this year and looks like it paid off. Mike’s assist with a 6.2 didn’t hurt. One year and you may be lucky. Two years in a row you got something figured out. Way to go guys. They go home smiling with an extra $2,500. in first place money.

This labor day weekend, Saturday September 3rd we will hold our 2nd annual Fishing Quest. We all gather at the Lakewood Park Bible Camp for breakfast. Each volunteer loads his boat with a couple of Teen Challenge students and launches out on Devils Lake for a day of fishing. We could use some boats. Give me a call if you would like to get involved. East Bay - Friday, July 15, 2011

As of Friday, July 15, 2011, access to the east side of Devils Lake will be much easier. A new boat ramp has been constructed by the North Dakota Game & Fish in the Black Tiger Bay area of Devils Lake. The new ramp is located along Highway 20 south, beside the South End R & R campground and is open for public use.

The other boat ramp on East Bay, located south of Devils Lake on Highway 20, by Camp Grafton, will be available for use by the public on Friday, July 15. The weather set back the work on this grade raise and it took a little bit longer than expected. According to Suzie Baisch, the tourism director for Devils Lake, “Access on the east side of Devils Lake has been a little tricky this summer. Because the water level has reached an elevation of 1454, boat traffic under the bridges is no longer feasible. The water level has also made us have to raise or move boat ramps. Because of this setback, anglers have been launching their boats from sunken road ways or ditches. This can be very dangerous. I am glad to see the public ramps are finished and usable.”

Other public boat ramps available on Devils Lake are Lakewood Boat Landing, located on Creel Bay, Six Mile Bay Boat Landing, located on Six Mile Bay, Pelican Lake, north of Highway 19, and Spirit Lake Casino.

Also available for access onto Devils Lake is Graham’s Island State Park, located off of Highway 19. The day pass for the state park is $5, or you can purchase a yearly pass for $25. Graham’s Island is open on a day-by-day basis this year due to high water conditions. Construction on the road into the park should begin sometime in August.

Hi all:  just did an evening fish with my son and good friend.  Pitched cranks into shallow water and we ended up catching fish all night long with sizes ranging from 10" to 23".  Couple of slough sharks and 1 bass.  Orange and firetiger seemed to catch the most fish.  Hope this helps.

I will be heading out to DL July 18-22nd.  Wondering if the spinner bite is in full swing or if I should plan on more shallow water cranks/slip bobbers.  Was out about a month ago and the bite was still very shallow.  I'm assuming the warmer water has pushed things deeper by now but who knows.  Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.  I will post when I get back for those planning trips in August.  I will be staying at Eastbay so will mainly be fishing black tiger and east devils.  Thanks for any tips!

When do the white bass do the spawning thing and catching them is a no brainer?  Is it going on now?

Fished with cranks in the AM. alot of pike & white bass with a few small walleyes. fishing got really good when we moved in to the flat water of 8 to 10 ft in the afternoon. Used jigs with minns & found fish really fast. Alot of 16" to 18" fish that were very aggressive to our jigs. We had alot of boats around us using spinners & lindy's, but not as many fish as we were catching. Last fish of the day was a 26" walleye that went back into the lake. My son & i had our 10 fish in a hour & went back to Jamestown. ALOT of fun with the group we were with, would love to go back this wknd to try again....

Switched to beer drinking fishing over the 4th just for fun.  We were pulling cranks through the gap and did pretty well.  We only caught 8 in about 5 hours but they were all between 23-29 inches.  Used some blue gill sent on the cranks, it seemed to help.  Oh, and picked up a 4.5 white bass!!  That one is going on the wall.  And all of the walleye's were filleted and released.

Fished out near Doc Hadens and did well, key was to fish in 7-9 fow near weeds ( outer edges) lots of small 11-13" walleye mixed in with nice ones. caught limit with most fish in the 17-18" range with 3  nice 21" 4 lbrs.
Fish the trees out by Grahams and picked up a few but mostly pike as the water was to clear.
Slip bobber with leach was top catcher followed by casting. the jig bite picked up towards evening using plastics and leaches.  Key all week was fish the back bays in 7-9 ' of stained water along weed lines or casting to wave
washed shores with cranks on windy days.

Fished all day yesterday, nice day to be out.  Started the day off with a 23" 4.5lb walleye.  Took a few pictures and let her go.  Rest of mid-day was slow for walleyes but had fun catching 2-6lb northerns.  Fiesty little guys!  At 2030 the walleyes moved back in and it was non stop until I quit at 2300.  Caught over 20 walleyes in those couple hrs, along with a few white bass...which by the way still have eggs.  Casting #5 shad raps was the key last night, slip bobbering with leeches only produced little walleye.  And man when they hit the shad rap...hold on!  I was fishing off shore again in the same spot I posted about last week.  That makes 3 trip with 3 limits!  Hope everyone has a good holiday weekend and good luck fishing!

Report For Wednesday thru Sunday;

Fishing remains mixed and ever changing. Out east; there has been a lot of fish be caught in the Browns bay, some hit or miss in the Haybale area and Penny bay is starting to heat up. Main bay area, folks are having some luck in the Doc Hagens area, north of the bridge in 6 mile and just south of the six mile boat launch and the south end of Creel bay. Ramp at six mile is in great condition and the fish cleaning station is back up and running. Out West, Howards farm is producing some fish along with a few of the “new” bays created on the south end of the lake. Another hot spot for some has been the north west corner of the lake, north of Minnawalkin/west of old 281/south of 19 if that makes any sense. BE CAREFUL crossing old 281 it is shallow!!!!!! Mauvee coulee has still been slow but shore fisherman are finding some fish towards evening.

Ok, so there’s the spots now how they catchin’em? Once again, mixed bag of tactics. Bottom bouncers with worms and leeches targeting the outside weed lines in about 10 FOW standard gold or silver spinners. Cranks have been decent casting to structure, your standard Devils Lake colors, firetiger, chrome blue, perch, hot steel ect. Slip bobber bite has been kinda slow during the day, lots of little fish, but towards the afternoon it has been starting to heat up. Mimics have been my stable over the last two weeks and yielding good results but expect that to start dying off as the water temps start rising.

Hope this gives you some starting points, fishing in general has been a bit slower than normal for this time of the year and here is why I think that is. Water temps remain low, fished 66 degree water yesterday up in Pelican but the weed growth rate is still very fast. The fish are in the weeds/reeds and with the weed growth they are getting harder to get to and they have no reason (temp/food) to leave from there. With the new rain fall, Saturday night was a doozy, and lower temps for the beginning of this week I don’t see much changing. Towards the end of the week things should start picking back up. We really need to see that water temp get into that 70 range then things will really heat up.

Now a shout out to the set of clients I had out on Saturday. They wanted pictures and big fish, eaters if we ran across them. Their first 4 fished weighed in at 4.7, 5.3, 6.1, and 4.8. There 5th fish weighed in at a rocking 7.8lbs breaking their personnel best! Congrats guys!! We were fishing in Pelican using 3/8 mimic minnows  in the reed lines that didn’t have a lot of weeds in front of them.

And finally, the big, big, big fish award goes toooooooo…………Two guys on this site. Wont say their names because they can tell their own story but it was just short of 10lb walleye caught on a Salmo Hornet. Congrats guys!!!!
