Devils Lake (Overview) - Monday, December 12, 2011

I fished round lake area (east end just off old 281) on Sunday and got one northern.  Ice was around 8 inches or so there.  There was only one other house there at the time and it was unoccupied.  We didn't see evidence of any other holes being drilled there.

Also heard about a "hot spot" over at Goose Lake by Harvey.  Also fished there Sunday.  Everyone we talked to said "you should have been here a few days ago".  Ice there was a foot thick.

Then on the way back to DL we fished west side of hwy 20 just south of the city dike and caught small perch.  All but one went back.  Ice there was around 8 - 10 inches.

Saw some people walking out on Mission Bay just south of the Casino.  Braver souls than me.

Looking for an updated report on how shore fishing has been in the six mile bay area or around the Hwy 20 bridge.  Thinking about coming that way on Friday to wet a line.

We fished Fort Tauton Pt., Cactus point and the Misson Bay Tressel. (No bulky windsheild to prevent us from going under the bridges.)
We caught Forty walleyes ( two five pounders and several others over 16”), 26 whites ( five 17” and one 18”),  1 NP and 1 perch. Jigs and minnows in 20 - 30 feet of water. Had a great day of fishing.

9-20-11

The bite has been very good! Seems like the weather has either been flat calm or very windy. Even with the up and down weather the fish have cooperated and we have had some great catches. We are starting to see a bit of a transition with the fish. There are still fish out deeper (14-25ft) of water; however, we are seeing more and more fish in the shallows. Pitching cranks and jigs/plastics into the shallows is a great way to cover some water and find that active school of fish. Some other good fall patterns include current areas near the bridges and whatever weed beds that you can find. As the weeds die off look for flooded roads and rock piles to heat up. As the water continues to cool down we really target shallow water fish. Seems like most days we are still catching a lot of eater size walleyes and we usually have some nicer ones mixed in as well. Nicer fish should continue to bite better and better as fall continues. If you enjoy hunting and still want to have some great fall fishing, there is no better place to be than Devils Lake. Duck and goose hunting in the morning with some fishing in the afternoon. Make sure you don't miss the window to do both. Good luck to all!!

Stayed at Eastbay Campground for the first time this weekend. Real nice place. Rented one of their smaller cabins and that worked out well. On Saturday fished in Haybale Bay and caught a lot of healthy but smaller walleyes. We were using spinners with crawlers and minnows. Seemed like the best depth was 17-19ft, but also caught fish anywhere from 15-25ft. Next day decided to try a few different spots but ended up at Haybale Bay again. Tried the Dairy Farm and Penny Bay, but only caught fish in Haybale. Caught more healthy but smaller walleyes, but one towards the end was little over 15 inches so that one came home for dinner. I too noticed the debris near the Stromme Addition and also thought it was weird. Just a beautiful weekend to be on the water and catching fish was an added bonus.

Fished the strommes area this weekend with pretty good luck. Smaller fish everywhere like usual but did manage to pull some nice fish out of the weeds.  Spinners with crawlers are all I used all weekend. We pulled spinners right through the weed beds. Half the time we were picking weeds off and the other half of the time we were pulling fish off. Biggest fish of the weekend went just under 25 inches CPR.  What an absolute beautiful weekend to be on the water.  I did have quite the eye opener on sunday though.  We were making the 10 minute trek from haybale to strommes like I have been doing all summer long and right over by the old lagoon area there is a HUGE floating tree out in 40 fow where it has no business being.  Im assuming it finally rotted and floated up from foughtys as the wind has been a non factor the past week so I know it didnt blow in.  There was alot of smaller branches floating about a 100 yd perimeter around it that we almost ran into as well. Thank god it was calm because in a good chop it would be hard to see.  Who knows where this wind will take it now but beware if anybody gets around that area.

I am heading to Devils Lake for the first time - Sept. 26 through Sept. 28 and will be at the casio for training during the day. I would like to do some evening fishing in my boat and was wondering if anyone had some pointers or advice on what to fish with and where to fish around the casino? It would be a bonus to bring home a couple of walleyes. Any help would be great!

Minnewaukan Flats - Monday, September 5, 2011

Weeds ‘n Reeds

This is far exceeding my expectations. Everyone is talking 13 inch fish and we are fast on to our second fish over 20!

Secluded cabins, complete with everything, including the sounds of waves washing the beach and steaks sizzling on the grill. Westbay Resort is located on the NW Shore of Minnewaukan flats just off of Hwy 19. Easy access, easy fishing, I guess that’s why they call it the easy life.

Eric, a local guide gave us some pointers on where to start. Winds were predicted to blow 25 out of the WNW and sure enough the weather man was right on. First stop was in 10 feet with cranks. Didn’t feel right so 10 minutes later we are pulling lead in 17 and in another 10 we are on the way to our third stop.

Wind is really starting to blow and it just so happens that Eric’s suggestion leads us to a protected area completely out of the wind. As soon as we put down, action began and it wasn’t long before I had to take a break. If I broke any more plaque loose from my over-pressured arteries I was gonna blow a fuse.

It’s Sept 1st and while the dog days may be in full effect their full effect is minimal here in Devils Lake. Fishing 9 feet may seem shallow according to walleye wisdom but I like to let the walleyes do the talking and they are talking 9 feet.

The strategy is to stay between the reeds that are inside in 7 feet and the weeds that are outside in 10-12 feet. In some areas that leaves a path or alleyway that is somewhat open and free of weeds. Just enough room for a boat and 4 cranks to follow along behind.

Plenty of time is spent cleaning weeds from lines but more time is spent reeling in walleyes. Things did settle down by noon and we got a chance to catch our breath and count fish. A quick look around and we were off to another area that looked similar.

The move got us our biggest fish of the day and into what looks like a pattern that can be used all over the lake. The green reeds seem to be holding bait as the deeper weeds are dying off. This is moving fish into the shallows where they are chasing young of the year everything. Our fish were feeding on small Shad Rap sized perch.

They were also feeding on plastic. RS-4’s with Blk/Gold being the best in the morning. Later in the day that switched to Blue/Chrome. Our best fish came on a Salmo Hornet but the most consistent bite was from the Ripshads. My number one lure for the past two years has been a Wonderbread Red in Reef Runner Ripshad.

No matter what you read, see or hear about walleye fishing, let the walleyes chose the lure. I spend too much time over thinking this fishing game. Just go fishing, try it all and let the walleyes decide what is best.

The best on western Devils Lake is without question Westbay Resort. Jim and Dianne will show you firsthand what western hospitality is all about. Cabins are open year-round and one DL guide just revealed to me that he expects this winter’s perch action to be the best he has seen in years.

By now you have certainly heard about the big fish bite on Pelican. I suspect you have also heard that access is tuff. By next spring that will likely be history. Jim from Westbay and the ND Game and Fish are working on a ramp that will provide protected, easy access. I did a dry run through the location and this has the potential to be the best ramp on all of Devils Lake.

When I run for Governor my plan is one mandatory day off every week to fish somewhere you have never fished before. Until then you will have to make your own plans. I suggest you let the walleyes do the talking. Shus- - quiet, I think I hear them, “Catch me in Devils Lake”. See you there.

off weed bed 10 fow was ok.   deeper hole 28 fow provided steady action of 12 inch walleyes to sort through for the occasional 14in.    largest caught 20in.   last fish caught 6 lb northern that wouldn't let go of 10 inch walleye.....

Took my step dad and step brother to devils lake the 19th - 21st. Neither of them fish at all so it was interesting but a great time. Fished howards bay the first evening pulling bouncers and caught roughly 20 fish most small only kept 6 that wer over 14 inches. Second day we fished the east side of 57 vertical jigging off a weed bed and absolutely hammered the walleye and perch! i have never caught so many fish in my life! Most wer small (except the perch witch were like little footballs!)  My two companions were so astonished by the numbers we caught. We ended up keeping our limit of walleye and a dozen perch. Third day we vertical jigged rocky point quickly catching our limit of 15 and 16 inche walleyes. Both locations we stayed in about 16 to 18 fow. What a weekend to take my family out fishing!
