Fished DL Thursday through Sunday morning last weekend.  Overall fishing was slow with morning and evening bites good but just little 12 to 13" walleyes.  We caught a few perch but notices some others at the cleaning station with more perch and bigger size than ours.  We started in creel bay and work our way out to wolfords bay and other points around the lake.  Tried many depths and locations.  Seemed the fish bit a 1/2 hour before sunrise and the bite lasted about an hour.  Fun action, just not good sizes.

We fished 10 foot down to 50 foot.  Most of our fish caught in 22 to 27 feet of water.  Mornings and evenings we caught more fish jigging than on bobbers.  We only caught a few all weekend on bobbers.  If the fish were not taking the lure, scale down to a minnow head and that seemed to help.

Overall, fish were negative and during the daytime the action was slow.  Still a great day to be on the ice.  Some people driving around on the lake.  Ice was 14 inches most places.  Careful around the heaves.  Good luck.

Finally planned a trip to Devils Lake after so many years of thinking about it. We will be hitting the lake on the 20th-23rd targeting some walleye/perch action.
I personally have fished Devils Lake many years during the open water season but never ice fished before on DL. Is it at tricky as it is during the warm weather month (where you have to be "Spot on the Spot")?

Can anyone suggest any bays/points/area to try. Hoping to land one of those world famous Perch potentially a mount (able) fish. Also, will the ice be thick enough (by then) to be driving mid-size truck around the lakes/bays?

Any hits/suggestion/tips is appreciated.

Fished east bay on Sunday, Fishing was slow until sunset, fishing picked up pretty quick.

Fished in 8-17ft of water, some holes near the trees and some out in deeper water. Caught 3 nice jumbos and 4 walleyes. The Walleyes came on big minnows with jigs and spoons, One perch was caught on a minnow head and the rest on BIG minnows. Half the fish were caught on tip ups including the 27.5 inch walleye. The big walleye bit about 30 min after dark inn about 11ft of water.

Good outing for Devils Lake!

1-9-12

Weather is absolutely crazy right now! We are more like October than January. There have been many days where you can fish outside all day and be very comfortable. I'm sure cold is coming eventually, but it sure has been nice.

Walleyes have been on the feed and the bite has been very solid. Seems like they are biting all over the lake and everyone seems to be doing well. Our best depths are that 8-18 ft of water. We are catching most of our walleyes an hour before sunset, but there are days that we get some good mid day action too. The morning bite has been fair but not as good as the night bite for us.

Perch have been biting with the walleyes, we have had some beautiful perch and we have had some days where the numbers are good as well. We have caught perch as shallow as 10 feet and as deep as 50 feet. The real key to perch is moving, moving, moving until you get on the active school.

Pike have been good on Devils Lake in shallower (5-10 feet) and some of the smaller lakes around Devils have been fantastic. We have caught fish on every lure that is made I do believe, the real key is location and being on the 'spot on the spot.' It is interesting how one house will hammer them and the house 50 feet away might struggle. Really look at the GPS's, maps, etc. and find the flooded rock piles, drop-offs, edges on weeds and you will catch fish!

Good luck and remember to please be safe out there. Overall, the ice is pretty good; however, avoid the bridges, culverts, or any areas of current. We do still have a bay that has open water on East Devils Lake, there are about 5,000 geese keeping it open. This area is east of Coxes Flat. Make sure you stay way from this area!!

Fished the Sheep Farm the last couple of evenings with pretty good results.  3 man limit of eater walleye (17-19") each evening.  With a couple bonus eyes over 23" and one jumbo perch.  Chubby darters and fireball jigs.  Nothing on the dead sticks.  Luckily we didn't run into those singing yahoos anymore!  Just got back in from trying it again and only marked one fish.  Must be an eventing bite.

The bite has been good at Devils Lake!

Seems the best action is in that 10-12 ft of water for walleyes and perch. We have been fishing East Bay (from Black Tiger to East Devils Lake) and it seems like everywhere we are going we are finding fish. Some of the perch are huge and most of the walleyes are in that 13-16 inch range. We have had some big eyes as well with one of them reaching 30 inches. Best bite is early and late for eyes and the perch have been good all day. Not everyday has been hot for perch but there have been many good days for them. We have fished out as deep as 25 ft with some good success for eyes and perch as well. As far as the pike fishing goes we have had some mixed in with the eyes an perch. We have also went in shallower for them with some luck. We have found some clearer water and had some success sight fishing pike. There are still some areas that need to be fished and if we can get clear water it should be game on for sight fishing pike!
As far as the ice goes it is pretty good. Most areas are 8-12 inches thick. There are some places that we have not been to that I would say might have questionable ice. There were geese keeping some water open about a week ago so I WOULD NOT venture on that ice just yet (the area is east of Coxes flat on East Devils Lake.)

As far as presentation goes I'm not sure if it really matters. I think it is hard to beat a buckshot with a minnow head for eyes and the perch have been smacking them as well. Seems like you pound it off the bottom 4-5 times and bring it up a foot or two and they come up and hammer it. Fish with whatever lure you have the most confidence in! Some days more subtle is good and other days it is all about being aggressive, of late, aggressive is the key!

Good luck to all and have a Merry Christmas!!

Been fishing the gap the last couple of weekends.  It was dynamite two weekends ago.  Lots of perch with a few walleye mixed in.  This weekend was a little slower with the predictable morning and evening bite.  There has been two idiots out there everytime I have gone.  They are hammering em.  I don't know what they are doing over in there trap.  But everyday at noon they start playing there pow-wow music.  And after that they are charged up chanting and hollering along with the music. Thye yell Turtle man all the time!  They seem to get really crazy when people try and fish close to them. They left there auger out on the ice tonight.  Along with an empty fifth of crown.

Caught a pile smaller walleyes and a handful of keepers over the last few days... also a few real nice perch. We have just been covering ground and trying new spots... Some spots, it's obvious there are lots of smaller fish there, and some spots you don't even mark anything. Salmos have been good, but when fish won't hit my salmo I send down a buckshot with a minnow head and work that... which has usually yielded that fish. Still trying to find the honey hole! undsiouxma13's tip of the week - bring skates if you don't want to bring your atv.. skates are fun and effective! Good luck
