Devils Lake (Overview) - Monday, February 6, 2012

2-6-11

The bite remains very good on Devils Lake! We are catching walleyes and perch on a very consistent basis. The best bite for walleyes is the first two hours in the morning and the last hour or two before dark. During the middle of the day, the only way that we catch walleyes on a regular basis is by fishing the edges of structure. The bite is usually really good on top of humps, points, flooded roads, rock piles, and basically any kind of structure you can find early and late in the day. To catch walleyes during the middle of the day, we have been fishing the first major drop-off nearest structure and having luck. We will usually have perch action out in the deeper water as well. If you are willing to do some work, the perch are going as well. Many of the same schools are being fished and we are finding better luck getting away from the people. The key is to drill and move until you find them. We are usually able to find them and the good thing is once you do that they have been pretty aggressive. We have caught some very nice perch and also seen a lot of smaller fish, so the perch future on Devils Lake appears bright!

The best bait for us this winter has been a buckshot with a minnow head. We have used spikes as well, but it seems like most days the minnow head is the preferred bait. Good luck to all! The bite should stay solid right until ice out! Conditions are good on the lake, there are some pressure ridges that you need to be careful around, but other than that, the ice is in good shape!

Fished six mile on the 4th, ended the day with 4 walleyes 14-18 inches and a couple perch. Fished in 26ft of water. Most of the fish bit on a plain treble hook with a minnow.

Fished 4 different spots around East Devils lake looking for fish.  Punched 70+ holes and never even set up the houses.  Caught a couple of sharks out in 37' of water which is odd.  But no walleyes or perch besides 3 dinks.  The holy bay of Jerusalem could be a good fishing spot if a guy could learn to fish it.  But the city of houses was up to the NE of us so I guess we were still in the country...

Today was my first time out on the Minnewauken Flats and I was a little nervous about driving on D.L. that far out.  I went out and fished around some guys with a trailer and only seen one tip up fly and got a couple hits from a perch but didn't hook it.   I wonder how they did.  Then I tried closer to shore and got one walleye around some brush in about 10' feet of water.  I heard it was supposed to be good perch fishing around there but I got skunked.  Any tips or info anybody can offer?  Thanks.

Anyone been out around Minnewaukan area. Thinking about trying my luck since I will be coming from the Oberon area and Minnewaukan is fairly close. I was also contemplating trying the round lake area too. Any advice would be great. Happy fishing!

A buddy and I (from Minot AFB)are looking at trying DL for the first time in a couple weeks and are wondering if someone could point us in the right direction.  I am not asking for your favorite honey hole, just a few areas to get us started and a suggested hotel/motel or lodge to stay in,   We regularly fish Darling and would be willing return the favor if you come our way.

Went out Saturday and Sunday.. Saturday morning had no idea where to start, but it wasn't going to be where everyone else was. Used the Navionics app to find different things (even if it's off about 7 feet, it certainly makes it easier in the winter!) Ended up with 6 Saturday, 2 guys, probably caught a dozen total and my buddy had on a huge northern on up to the hole.. Then Sunday with 3 guys total, snagged 13 nice keeper walleyes with a few nice 17"s couple 18"s and a 19.5" The rest were 14's or a mite bigger on some. We mainly fished in about 10-25 feet, not an icehouse around anywhere.. but even caught a few walleyes at 38 feet when we were on a perch search. Never did locate any perch, or at least active ones, and we checked about 30 locations. Mainly ones that just looked good, and even cruised in to an area where other people were and tried a few spots.. not marking or catching a thing in any. We drove by some houses that were parked in 55 feet of water. So there must be quite the range on the ol' perch these days. Chartreuse Buck-shots tipped with minnow seemed to ring the best dinner bell. Good luck ~

I have never been to devil's lake so i decided to give it a try.  Looked up bait shops in the area to see if they can guide me in the right direction so i headed to Ed's bait shop, and they didnt seem to care much about giving some friendly advice...  Their response was the lake is good everywhere, any presentation will do.....

Wow really?????  anyways as i walked out the bait store the guy parked next to me started chatting about military.. he could tell from my hair cut..

He said if i have never been out on devils lake, i should start at the boat ramp about a mile down highway 20 from the bait store.  Thanks again tim.

Anyways it gave us a place to start we moved up and down the lake twice from 15 FOW to 30 FOW.  and I left the world renowned Devil's Lake skunked...

Fished Devils lake with my wife today. We fished south of Pop's bar from sunup til 11am and ended up with one walleye on a jig and minnow. We tried several different bait presentations and could not get them to bite. After lunch, we moved to Creel bay just south of the boat ramp and caught one northern on a Salmo chubby darter. I had another fish on, but couldn't land it. Overall, it was really slow and really cold. However, I talked to a few guys at the gas station and they said they nailed the walleyes all day long at six mile bay.

hey guys i was hoping that you can help me out.  I havent been ice fishing in over 2 years now, and i have never fished devils lake in the summer or the winter.  One last thing is that I have never driven on ice before.  If you guys can provide general locations for me to google and drive out to that would be great.  I am not looking for honey holes, just some general info such as a bay, or landmark where it would be a good place to start.  I am pretty new at this still, and i do not have all the fancy equipment, just poles, auger, and a small pull over tent.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.  I am thinking of spending the day out there tomorrow.

Fished over the weekend (20th -23rd). Fishing was decent, most action was in the morning and evening, when the fish were active, the action was good. Not many big fish were caught but plenty of eaters (13"-17") where caught. Many smaller one were release as well.

Best place was by the tower area in the 30's FOW. Marked fish all day while we were at the spot. Mix bag of eater walleyes with jumbo perchs.

End up catching over 100+ eye caught (took home our limits on eyes) and a few dozen jumbo between the 8 of us. We did see a few big pike but only landed some smaller ones.

Lure of choice were glow spoons during low light condition and rattle/bright color lures during light period. Lindy Flyer spoon was top pick follow by buckshot and machos minnow. Dead stick was slow, most fish caught while  jigging.

Overall, good weekend other than the cold weather....
