Devils Lake Fishing Reports
Devils Lake (Overview) - Friday, May 17, 2013
Last week’s warm weather and some windy days resulted in Devils Lake now being ice free and open to both boating and shorefishing. As for shorefishing, this is one of the best times of the year. With warmer water moving in from the coulees that feed Devils Lake, spawning fish congregate in those areas and the result is some excellent shorefishing. Anglers are reporting some excellent pike and walleye fishing in Channel A and the Mauvee Coulee. The Mauvee Coulee areas that have been producing walleye and pike include both the section north of Lake Alice that goes up towards Cando and between Lake Irvin and Pelican Lake. In these areas anglers are using jigs tipped with twister tails, leeches, or minnows. Anglers are also using cranks such as shad raps, countdowns, flicker shads, and hornets. The best bite is early morning, and late evening. On warmer days, anglers are also reporting some good fishing in the middle of the day when the water temps are at their peak. Anglers are also reporting excellent pike fishing in the coulees in the Garske area. This time of year the fish are moving and if they’re not biting in one area, don’t be afraid to move to the next bridge or bring up Google Earth and look for your own remote spot to try. As for boaters who finally have some open water to fish, the best bite is similar to that of the shorefishing. Best times are early morning and evening at the moving water bridges and in shallow bays and warmer water areas during the peak temperature times of the day. This time of year moving water and the warmest water are keys to better fishing. In the moving water bridge and coulee areas, try jigging with plastics or using livebait. In the shallow bays, cranking smaller cranks such as #5 shad raps, hornets, countdowns, and flicker shads works well. Blue/silver, black/silver, perch, firetiger, white, bleak, and purpledescent are the typical hot colors this time of year. Some of the better early open water spots are the moving areas such as the mouths of the Mauvee Coulee, Channel A, any of the bridges around the lake and the shallower warmer water bays. These can be the bays of the Mauvee, the north end of Six Mile, the western shores of the Minnewaukan Flats, and the shallower bays of Black Tiger and East Bay. The best fishing has been for walleyes and pike with perch and bass fishing being rather slow at this time. As water temps pick up, the spring bass spawn should start as well and add to the action for both shorefisherman and boaters. After you catch that limit of fish, don’t forget that Devils Lake now has a new year around heated and air conditioned indoor fish cleaning station located next to Eds Bait Shop for the public to use. There is no charge for it’s use. This weekend, the Lake Region Anglers Association will be having their annual Spring Northern Outing on Saturday May 18th at the Pelican Lake ramp. Take off is at 8:00 am and participants must register prior to that time. ANS inspections are required and can be done at the tournament site or Eds Bait Shop. No late entries are accepted. |

Viewing the various web cams around the lake, it looks like the last two days of wind have taken most of the ice off.
Lakewood and woodland both look clear. ![]() |

Devils Lake (Overview) - Friday, May 10, 2013
The start of the open water spring fishing on Devils Lake has begun. While the lake is still largely frozen and not yet open for boat activities, the coulees and streams running into the lake are open and the fish have started their annual spring spawning run. The Mauvee Coulee both north and south of Lake Alice/Irvin is open and anglers are reporting both pike and walleyes are starting to bite. The coulees in the Garske area are open as well with a lot of pike running through that area. Channel A at the north end of Six Mile has really taken off for both walleyes and pike. Anglers are reporting pike fishing being good throughout the day with walleyes being best towards evening. A good resource for finding these coulees and streams or searching for your own little hot spot is Google Earth. In most areas anglers are using jigs tipped with minnows or twister tails. White, black, and chartreuse have been the better colors. Anglers are also using cranks such as shad raps, countdowns, hornets, and flicker shads. White, perch, silver/blue, silver black, and firetiger always work well this time of year. Most fishing is being done by from shore, however some anglers are putting in small lighter boats they can carry or slide in and fishing these coulees as well. Those doing that are also reporting some excellent fishing. Keep in mind ND regulations do not allow snagging or netting of fish. A snagged fish is considered to be a fish that’s hooked behind the gill plate. As for the lake opening up, the ice is deteriorating fast and we advise NO ONE to venture out on it at all at this point. With warm weather continuing in the forecast, the lake should be opening up within the next week to 10 days with Pelican Lake and Six Mile Bay typically opening first due to the warmer moving water from the Mauvee and Channel A going into those areas. To watch the progress of the lake melting, check out the webcams on North Dakota Telephone Company’s site http://www.gondtc.com or Woodland Resort’s site at www.woodlandresort.com. Good Luck and we hope you have some great fishing this season in the Devils Lake region! Devils Lake Convention & Visitors Bureau

Devils Lake (Overview) - Monday, May 6, 2013
Monday, May 6, 2013Come on warm and wind!! The weather is starting to act more like May and the ice is getting softer by the day. At this point I would not suggest ice fishing on Devils Lake. Ice is getting mushy and the edges are open nearly everywhere on the lake. Channel A area is opening up more and more each day. There have been some pretty good bites happening on ice and in smaller boats in the Six mile bay (Channel A area). Key to fishing this time of year is to fish current. Anywhere there is water coming into the lake, bridges, culverts, etc. all will hold fish. If we can keep up this nice weather, ice should be off shortly! I am hoping for 10 days... Needless to say, everyone in the Devils Lake area is excited for open water fishing! If you want to get out and experience some of the best walleye, bass, and pike fishing in the country, give us a call or shoot us an email and we will make it happen! Hi, I was wondering how the ice was holding up and looking for some info on spots to fish for walleye and perch. I see the report about the ice holding up from a few days ago but will it be accessible this weekend? I will be walking. Thanks

Devils Lake (Overview) - Tuesday, April 30, 2013
April 30, 2013 Warm weather over the weekend has sure put smiles on the faces of area anglers! Warmer temps have shrunk the snow significantly on the ice allowing much better access for ice anglers. We still have lots of ice, but the edges will begin to recede soon. Some are still driving full size trucks out, but we would recommend caution. I had a chance to check out some of the shore fishing locations on Sunday and found zero current on Channel A on Hwy 2, and the Mauvais coulee near Church’s Ferry. The Big coulee south of Garsky is running full and other upper basin coulees should be starting to move water. My guess is we will see strong water flows from now into the next couple of weeks. These systems should produce outstanding fishing very soon. The big question is when will ice be out. My guess is the 15th to the 18th of May. Hopefully sooner! Good luck! Does anyone have any suggestions for ice fishing on DL this weekend? I haven't been out in awhile but I would like to get out one more time... I am sure I will be walking with the sled and that is ok. Is there anywhere that is not covered with 2 feet of snow and still safe to fish... maybe even catch a few...
Thanks for any help! |
