Devils Lake (Overview) - Saturday, August 21, 2010
Lots and lots of fish, most hitting on the drop of the jig. best fishing was from 7pm til dark. I got smoked by my girlfriend in both catagories- size and quantity. Tied to a tree close to Graham's. I wanted to go out Sunday but after looking at 3'-5' whitecaps and hearing they called the tournement, we packed up and came home.

Pelican Lake (Devils Lake Inset) - Friday, August 20, 2010
Doctor Schoneck you’re needed in emergency Last week I left Sakakawea with water temps in the mid to high 70’s. The reception from Devils Lake was a bit chilly. We arrived with low dark clouds and lightning, not what I expected to see due to the decent forecast. The real shocker was water temps. 68, na can’t be, must be broke. I prepared myself mentally for some tuff fishing. First on our list was 6 Mile Bay and we gave it our best. Two in a row just that fast. No, not fish. Here is how I suggest you prepare for the Devils Lake Crank bite. By everything in 6 packs, I’m sure you know how to do that. Then on the drive over sort through your cranks and find the ones you absolutely love. Now, take the six pack, roll down your window and give ’em a toss. It’s warm up exercises for what’s coming. Next up was Doc Hagens in 15 feet. Lots of action but short on size. We stuck in 16 feet thinking there would be a decent fish somewhere in the mix. NOT. A quick move to a road bed NE of Grahams Island put the first limit in the boat. In fact I was more than surprised by both the fact we were catching fish and the size. It’s still mid-morning and my hands are looking for any place they can find to warm up. We had a pizza waiting at 6 Mile Bait so the idea of a hot noon lunch was welcome. Plans were made for a move to the Grahams Island ramp and a trip over to Pelican. I suspect you, like me have heard the rumors that Pelican holds bigger fish. It’s way true, more than I even hoped. It far-far exceeded my expectations. We started in 15-16 feet using leadcore. The lead was out because I used it in the morning and it worked. I never pull lead in 15 feet. Just don’t need to, the little cranks will easily get that deep. Today it was a good move. We picked up several fish in the 20 to25 range and by late afternoon made our way to Westbay Resort, our overnight location. Westbay cabins are furnished for the outdoorsman. Complete with kitchen, fridge, gas grill, even a chest freezer! It’s also the closest resort to Pelican. Morning winds were up to 20 out of the SE so we had a ruff ride from Grahams Island to the bridge under Hwy 19. Once in Pelican everything smoothed out and we were back to where we left off. It’s not often that where you left off is going to be what you remembered. Sure enough it wasn’t. It was at least twice as good. There are only so many days allotted when it all comes your way. Be sure to be on the water on those days. We stared with Fireline and big cranks, no special reason except it is both easier and faster than lead. Our first fish was impressive and so was everything after. Our next limit came on lead, no reason just decided to try something different. Keep in mind this has nothing to do with exceptional ability or deep thinking. God is handing me a couple of great days fishing and all I have to do is let it come to me. We are fishing what I think is the shoreline of old Pelican Lake before it came up. It is characterized by big rock and a drop into deeper water. Right at the edge, just before the drop there is a couple foot rise made up of rock. If I knew I could find other structure like this I would gladly spend 3 days of just looking, scanning and hoping. Sakakawea has a place similar and when it is good it is tournament winning good. Big fish for whatever reason relate to this. Sakakawea doesn’t have the rock but it does have the edge that comes up quickly just before the drop into deep water. If you have a lake with something similar you may want to check it out, or give me a call, I will be happy to help in any way I can. Just get the coordinates and email me. We finally did move to a new location but stayed in the 15-17 foot depth. We finished the day with a 20 inch fish and started packing it in. That is when the most exciting part of the day occurred. Doctor Schoneck you’re needed in emergency! Jesse was putting away cranks and to his amazement sank a hook right to the bend in his hand. He was blown away by how easy it went in. Ya, been there, 5 times! Fireline is good for more than catching fish. WARNING This process works better if it is done on someone besides yourself. Anyway, a few wraps around the hook, few wraps around the pliers and snap. Oh ya I forgot one thing, if you’re the surgeon performing the procedure, best have hearing protection. Remember fishing is a learned sport. More you fish the better you get so better get fishing. GPS Google Earth Locations, Video and Pictures of this report please visit: www.ndlive.com |

Walleyes biting on the rock pile of old 281. Evenings and mornings and afternoon and midnight are the best times. Purple and HAMMERED copper work the best. Good Luck |

Devils Lake (Overview) - Wednesday, August 11, 2010
Went out Sunday 8/9/10 and had a succesful outing. Fished in East Bay in the deep weeds between Monestary point and the Dairy farm. Jigged with 1/2 crawler. Caught a lot of 9" to 13" with 2 keepers over 15" prior to 11am. Then went south to Penny bay and the submerged trees with cat tails that line the front of the bay. Cast shallow crank baits with just a piece of a crawler on the lead treble hook, caught several more small eyes and switched to a jig and pearl white 4" worm and started casting shallow and retrieve slowly through the trees just like Bass fishing. WOW!! The first eye caught was a 25" (C & R) Than, I caught the 3 remaining keepers (18"-19") in short order. I caught several more that anyone would have considered keepers but let them go for the next guy. I noticed that I really had to slow down presentations today. Normally with this water temp (77-78) I would be really ripping lures. The East bay side is really starting to green up. Really stood out today after the wind died down around 2pm. Also this year there sure seems to be a lot of long stemmed weeds floating free. A real bugger trying to troll crankbaits through. Tight Lines my Friends.

A few days late but, 5 of us went out on Saturday and went home with all 25 fish. Nothing too big most between 14-18 inches. Threw back some smaller ones. Add in a 9.5 lb pike on the walleye rig and it was a fun day. Slow down...we are constantly being passed by people not catching fish.

Rented a cabin this past week near Graham's Island and fished near there. Jigging in the trees was good, we had to really work hard for 16-18 inch fish. There were tons of 8-12 inch smalleyes and really nice bunch of 11 inch perch. (yes i did say perch). Best fishing was in 21' next to a rise to 17' point that harbored a bunch of 17-18 inch fish starting at 8:30pm til dark.

Fished this past weekend. Bottom bouncers and crawlers worked the best right on weedlines in 8-10 ft of water. It wasn't nonstop action but when you had one it was a nice one. If your looking for action trolling spinners on old roads produced tons of fish for us. Most in the 9-13" range with a few here and there from 14-17".

Dont have alot of time right now so Iwill make this short and sweet.
Alot of little fish being caught in traditional fishing manner. If you are looking for bigger fish, try targeting the trees where there are patches of weeds around the trees. Throw cranks on them and CONSTANTLY change colors till you find the "special" of the day, and yes it WILL change day to day. The fish are there!!!!!!!!!!!! During the FLW, the smallest fish we caught doing this was 1.7lbs which is a great eater. Till next time; |

Fished West Bay on hwy 19. Fishing was slow, caught a few little guys that were toss backs. 2 - 14 inchers in almost 8 hours but the bites from the small fish were steady enought to keep a person hoping. Good luck.

Devils Lake (Overview) - Saturday, July 31, 2010
Hi all. Hit the water with Johnnie Candle around 2:30 from Graham's Island. We (Dad and I) pulled spinners and bottom bouncers along cattail lines in 6-8ft of water. Hit fish within minutes of getting to the location. Picked through some small fish, but kept 7 nice fish between 15-21". Tip them with half nightcrawler and the rods on the closest side of the cattails caught the fish. Anything on the opposite side of the cattails didn't produce. I think a guy could pull shallow cranks along there, but you would have to be careful as the weed line could cause lots of hangups. Just a hunch though. Lots of guys cleaning fish at the cleaning station. Sounds like the FLW tournament winner averaged between 15-17 lbs each day so there are bigger fish to catch out there. Dan Driessen Devils Lake |

Fishing was tough. We marked a bunch all over Main Bay and East Bay (20-50ft). We caught some nice eaters, but it was a struggle. I bounced jigs in front of them, pulled lead, and even resorted to spinners. No presentation out performed the other. We just got one here and one there.

Devils Lake (Overview) - Monday, July 26, 2010
My son and I fished hard in many spots from Six Mile Bay to Grahams Island, we did not fair very well. We caught one small walleye that we threw back, and four slough sharks. We fished mostly 10-12 fow and thats were we caught the five we got. We tried a little deeper at about 18 fow but never got anything. used jigs with crawlers and leeches, bottom bouncers with spinners as well. We did see three guys at the six mile bay fish cleaning station that had a nice stringer of walleyes, 2 to3 lbs. They said they were west of Grahams Island 10-12 fow with mostly jigs...crawlers and leeches..

Fished friday night for 2 hours C & R 14 eyes between 10-19 inches with five over 14. Pulled spinners, crawlers outdid leaches. Saturday tried a litte of everything. kept our limit of 10, fished ranged between 14" and 18" that we kept. Through back many under 14. Best fish came along weed beds with crawlers in 8-10fow. Pulled lead in 22-26fow and managed only one keeper at 17" and numerous small eyes. Sunday fished for a few hours and managed to keep 11 with eight being 17-20. The biggest fish came in heavy weed cover with slip bobbers in 10 fow. Also tried lead again and only managed a few small eyes and some white bass. Overall decent weekend and the bite was light!
