Deer feed cheap

Hey fellow bow hunters. I have been doing some checking online and talking to people on making my own deer mineral lick this year. I was sick of buying bags of the swamp donkey or acorn rage at 10-15 bucks a bag. So I visited some livestock places and made my own. I picked up a 50 lb bag of sweet 45/dried molasses. This bag is a sugar beet pulp and molasses mix. Has a nice sweet odor to it for bringing the deer. 50 lb bag of trace mineral salt and 50 lb bag of Di-Cal which helps bone development and milk production in the Does while they are feeding. It also called for some regular salt but I did not use this. the mixture I used follows as.

2 parts sweet 45/dried molasses
1 part di-cal
1 part trace mineral salt

I used a mason jar and filled it to the brim each time and mixed in a 5 gallon bucket after I added each part of these ingredients and kept  mixing and repeating till the bucket was full. I dug a 6 inch hole about 3 feet wide smoothed the bottom of the hole and spread the mixture into the hole and stirred it again with a rake. Make sure all the powders are mixed together well once in the hole you dug. You can pour some water on top if you want I did not cause it was suppose to rain in the next couple days. I did how ever get this out to my hunting spot a little late this year but I set up trail cams and the deer are eating on it pretty good. Next time I do this I am going to get some ground corn and barley from a farmer  and try mixing in just the sweet 45 as an deer attractant. The total cost on all my supplies was around 60 dollars. Not bad for the amount of coverage I will be getting out of this bundle.

I know there are going to be some nay sayers on here but it works pretty good. Just trying to help anyone who wants it.

Is it?  I never have tried it without bait.  Bait, bait and more bait.  Brings em in real nice!  Thanks for the recipe Sig.

Yes.  It's also possible to walk up on one in his own environment and kill him in his tracks without ever setting foot in a stand/blind.

This moment is a paradox, it's the oldest you've ever been as well as the youngest you'll ever be.

That sounds hard.  I prefer to bait with a rifle while sitting in the pickup.

The bait gets you pictures more than kills.

Yes,  It is also possible to walk up on one that died of old age and then it wouldn't have to get shot with an arrow at all.  Would that be the most ethical?  Holy crap.  Let the guy help out people that want to bait (because it is legal) and leave this post for what it was meant to do which is to give advise on a bait recipe.

The pictures my bait produces are of deer with a 2 inch out hole left from my rage!

BTW, I was being just a bit sarcastic.  I actually have never killed a deer over a bait pile.  I have hunted bait before and it is legal so no prob.  It is just bait never seems to give a guy an opportunity of a serious deer.  Does and fork horns are about all I have ever seen over bait.

Sig357 thanks for the tip!

I have hunted deer both ways and both are legal and I have no problem at all with it.
BUT Skeeterguy that mess in your avatar is the exact reason they want to ban baiting.

Sure is. It's also possible to shoot a deer from a 1,000 yards with a rifle, hunt geese without decoys, and pheasants without a pointer.

I think you are refering to farm raised alturnative livestock,I was refering to White Tail deer in the wild.  Both are legal.

I put this on here so you can choose what you want to do with it. I hunt the badlands. I mainly use it to get pictures of deer. So I know what is a good spot and what is in the area the deer hang out in. I also use a grunt call, doe bleat, rattling bag and wash my clothes in scent killer and spray myself down once i get in the field. I am not saying you need to do this but if I am putting time in a stand or a 5 hour stalk I want to know its worth the while. I don't get a lot of extra time off to do some of the things I enjoy. Specially this year. You don't have to agree with my ways it was just some info to anyone who wants it. Hopefully one comes into my mineral lick and I get to stick em. Time is precious so maximize it. Some say baiting them in isnt hunting but I would rather have a 20 yard shot than 60 yard shot anyday of the week. Closer is better and you cant argue that.

Im pretty sure it is not allowed on federal land. I could be wrong though. From my understanding, anything you take in that day, has to be taken out that day also?

It is kinda funny how people make such a big deal out of somthing that is legal, oh did I mention it is legal. Oh and for the people who tried to ban it , ya it is still legal.

I've killed a bear and several deer over bait.  I've killed a bear and several deer sans bait.  I'll probably end up doing more of both.  Study my response and to whom I was responding, take a deep breath, and then relax.

I'm pretty sure corp is the only fed land you can bait on, and you can't bait on any state land.

Thanks Here in Mo on private land all baits must be cleanedup 10 days before season opener with no hunting over man made baits.  I don't know if a salt lick is considered a bait.  I know a guy who got caught bow hunting over a corn pile and it got espensive.

I really just don't like the idea of someone telling me I can't  hunt out of a stand next to a pail of corn on my own land.
