2 weeks before Christmas my grandpa was diagnosed with lung and liver cancer. He is 75 years old and smoked his whole life until around 15 years ago. I was saddened by the news, but I realize it was his own making.
I drove home the Friday before Christmas to spend time with my family. Upon arriving home, I discovered my Dad (my grandpa's son) had bad back pain. We took him in to the emergency room that night and discovered an abnormality in his bone marrow. On Christmas Eve, he had a CT scan in which it was confirmed that he had a tumor in his spine. Upon a further full body scan last Wednesday, we were told he also has cancer. The origin was his lung. It has now spread into his spine, hip, lymph nodes, and knee. He is 51 years old and has never smoked a cigarette in his life. The doctors at Mayo today said that this form of cancer is almost always attributed to second hand smoke.
I realize that smoking is a personal choice, but it is one of the only unhealthy habits that I can think of that not only puts you at risk, but also puts others. If you smoke around your children, I urge you from the bottom of my heart to please quit exposing them.
