Dad and Grandpa

2 weeks before Christmas my grandpa was diagnosed with lung and liver cancer. He is 75 years old and smoked his whole life until around 15 years ago. I was saddened by the news, but I realize it was his own making.

I drove home the Friday before Christmas to spend time with my family. Upon arriving home, I discovered my Dad (my grandpa's son) had bad back pain. We took him in to the emergency room that night and discovered an abnormality in his bone marrow. On Christmas Eve, he had a CT scan in which it was confirmed that he had a tumor in his spine. Upon a further full body scan last Wednesday, we were told he also has cancer. The origin was his lung. It has now spread into his spine, hip, lymph nodes, and knee. He is 51 years old and has never smoked a cigarette in his life. The doctors at Mayo today said that this form of cancer is almost always attributed to second hand smoke.

I realize that smoking is a personal choice, but it is one of the only unhealthy habits that I can think of that not only puts you at risk, but also puts others. If you smoke around your children, I urge you from the bottom of my heart to please quit exposing them.

Sorry to hear this news. I pray the best for your family. I also fully endorse your pleading with smokers to not expose others. God bless you and yours.

Sorry to hear that brady.  I also agree with your smoking stance.  My sister works in oncology and I can assure you it's a very tough profession

I grew up in the same generation as your Dad. We didn't have a choice, but at that time our parents (your Grandpa) didn't know any better either. Your Dad taught you and now you are spreading the word. Keep it going BradyG!

Yep I agree. I don't blame my Grandpa or Grandma because they did not know any better. With the knowledge we have to day, it is not excusable to expose kids to that. As adults, we have the decision to smoke, be around friends that smoke, go to bars that have smoke, etc, but kids just don't have the choice. The Doctors have told us that this form of lung cancer is unfortunately common in people your age group and this duration after that exposure. It wouldn't be a bad decision to get a check up.
