It wasn't a complete surprise that he was cut. He is coming to the end of his rookie contract and he is a bit of a free lance safety back there. His style of play hasn't always been coaches Belicheck's favorite. I don't think he has any lingering  injuries and he hasn't been in much trouble. I think ultimately it comes down to the Patriots have other needs and Patrick Chung is poised to take over.

sports.yahoo.com/nfl/blog/shutdown_corner/post/Former-Pats-safety-Brandon-Meriweather-leads-lis.

For the New England Patriots, that meant releasing safety Brandon Meriweather(notes), their first-round draft pick in 2007. Selected 24th overall, Meriweather has put up decent numbers through his career (261 tackles, 12 interceptions, and two quarterback sacks), but he was also benched more and more frequently by the Patriots' coaching staff for lapses in play. Meriweather made the Pro Bowl in each of the last two seasons over more deserving safeties line San Diego's Eric Weddle(notes) (yet another reason not to take the Pro Bowl very seriously), but Weddle now has a new $50 million contract, and Meriweather is on a one-year scholarship with the Bears, who signed him Sunday.

Kinda hafta hand it to Cutler I dunno what other QB could take pressure like that and still come out with a lead at halftime. Vick would be in a wheelchair, Big Ben would be missing his knees, Manning would be dead, and had it been Brady there woulda been and NFL record of penalties for people touching the QB. But they are lucky that they dont hafta play behind the pinatas on the bears o-line, when his accuracy is holding up he can really do some good things and hang on with the best of them. Detroit is in the end zone again looks like game over season over, Go Bison!

I dont go around guessing cup sizes either I just know a nice rack when I see one.

The closer the Vikings get to wrapping up last place in the division......again, the louder the birds sing.

You happy that we will have equally crappy teams?

Nice job by the Bears with two billion false starts.  That's 45 yards of offense.  Not to mention other garbage.  I too hand it to Cutler on that.

You Vikes complain about your offensive line.  Ha ha, you have no idea, none.  I wonder what we could do with a line?  I'll never know I'm afraid.  It sucks when you cannot get the ball downfield because there is zero time.

Bears gave them the game last night.  3 plays accounted for half the Lions offense and Bears false starts accounted for the other half.  785 total yards for Forte this year, they better get a deal done soon, best all-around back in the game (this year), stats don't lie.  Bottom line we had the ball 40 minutes of the game and we lost, how you ask?  Too many things to list.  Disgruntled Bears Fan!

Wow I never had really been a Cutler fan…and I was one that ripped on him pretty hard when he left the game last year….but wow has he taken a pounding and still comes up throwing…they could probably get better blocking out of their defensive line….

Yeah three plays was it for the lions but it is what it is when we have an aging defense with grandpas as safeties.

They just signed a few players from the practice squad one being a safety, we will see down the road how he plays.
