I am debating between a 2008-2009 duramax and a 2010-2012 Cummins, both crew cabs short box in 2500. Let me hear what you think problems likes dislike about the two.

Cummins.  Granted the chassis and drive train isn't as good as the chevy, fixing the chassis and drive train is a hell of alot cheaper than fixing the engine.  And a cummins you can actually work on if your somewhat mechanical.  It's a million mile motor.

Cummins.

Unless your planning on getting in drag races with Powerstrokes or Duramax's and cant stand loosing. Because you will. And when that happens you can feel good about your engine longevity and fuel economy.

All 2009's had the 6.7 liter.

In 2007 both engines were offered. Later than that it's been 6.7.

basically i am looking at an 09 chevy ltz with 67k dmax for $30k and 2011 cummins slt crew with 40k for $30k, the chevy is loaded to the hilt and a nice clean truck the dodge lacks options but is still a nice truck, to me it is about a toss up but i figured the FBO crowd is running some of these trucks and could throw their 2 pennies in

Between my son and I we've had fords and chevy's.  got rid of both because the cost to repair all the problems with the engines was absurd.  My son's duramax blew head gaskets and had to replace all the injectors.  then a year later had another injector go completely out and was told three more were sketchy.  that was a damn year later.  those remanned injectors are obviously junk.  ridiculous when you spend 50k for a truck.

Pulling occasional horse trailer with 2 to 6 horses otherwise 28ft camper and 20 ft boat. My 6.2 half ton with air bags pulled them just fine but i just need the extra room of a crew cab now and with the new 2014 chevy the only way you can get the 6ft 6in box and a 6.2 in a crew cab is in an ltz....for that money i will buy a diesel...I still haven't crossed off the idea of just getting a brand new diesel ford, chevy, or dodge, these two prementioned  trucks just seemed like good deals.

well the conclusion I've came to over the past half eight years is that to own a diesel you'd need your head examined to ever own one outside of warranty.  the price of parts alone is so far past the absurd level it's ridiculous.  then $110 an hr. shop rate, who the hell could afford to own one outside of warranty.  Or should I say who's dumb enough to own one outside of warranty.  Unless of course you've already spent 10k making it bullet proof.  But then the drive line doesn't hold up to the power they're making these things put out.

My dad has an 08 duramax he pulls fully loaded stock trailers all the time he has just over 100k and has never had a prob. I have an 11 Cummins for my work truck I pull a heavy goose neck trailer allot but mostly just sales I have 60k miles and I've had to replace tie rod ends that was a recall and I've replaced shocks twice and have had 2 exhaust problems and you can't go threw any water puddles cause it soaks the air filter and puts it in limp mode and that sucks

The scarry thing about buying a used diesel is most of the time you don't know what it was used for and how it was abused, regardless how much smoke somebody blows at ya. Going brand new is expensive nowadays but it gives a guy peace of mind with a warranty. If you end up looking into fords, stay away from anything thats older then 2011. Unless of course you get yourself a good ole fashioned powerstroke of course. The 6.0s were junk 08-10 came the 6.4 which was better but trust me they've had their fair share of problems too, kind of hit or miss with those, but when they hit, its like a 6-8k hit ouch.

I have an 07 Duramax and couldn't be happier.  That being said, I think the cummins is a good motor now.  I personally just love the feel of the Chevy and the Allison transmission is amazing.
