Culling in ND Fishing Tournaments

Anybody else think we need to change the law and allow culling in North Dakota for tournaments? It would put us up to speed with the rest of the United States and studies have shown fish mortality is very low for released fish.

I think it's long overdue...

Sorry, but I disagree, at least with walleye tournaments. Once a walleye is contained in a livewell with other fish, especially with water temps pushing the 70s, oxygen levels are low and the fish are stressed. Their survival chances drop off radically as they are in the livewell longer. How could you tell the recreational fisherman, fishing next to the tournament boat, that one can cull and the other can't? The recreational fisherman might have 19 stressed walleye in the box and wants to cull out that 14 incher that was caught first thing in the morning.

I have fished several tournaments and would not be in favor of culling.  Yes, it would put the tournament fisherman at an advantage, but that is part of the tournament.  Make the decision right then and there and live with it.  Even though there could be culling going on now, I would not be in favor of it. A 22 inch walleye in the well at 7:30 am should not be released late afternoon in favor of an 8 lb. fish.  Just my thoughts

What would the benefit of culling be anyway?  To give less skilled anglers a fighting chance of fishing the whole day with a full livewell and hopes of hooking a lucky whopper.

It's also hard on the fish, not so much largemouths that can live in a 90 degree oxygen depleted toilet for a week, but walleye don't handle it too well, especially in older boat livewells or with anglers that carelessly leave their aerators off.

Assuming your talking about bass tourneys as in the Bass Bandits I think it should be allowed. The loss of fish would be so minimal I can't really see what the problem would be. And to be honest I really don't think there would be that much of an uproar coming from the walleye crowd being most walleye tourneys in the state are catch and kill to begin with.

I am talking strictly tourney fishing here. Keep walleye tourneys how they are...allow culling in bass tourneys. My $.02

No sense in it if tournaments go to catch eight or ten and weigh best five.

Plenty of culling out there already in all realms of fishing.

Culling is OK for bass and such species that can tolerate rapid changes in water temps and primarily inhabit shallow water(25' or less). No need for it in walleye tournaments where automatic icing would make more sense. ND has the best regs on the Missouri--any 5 you want and accept the choice; screw a slot or over-under reg on a system that is self supportive. What really frosts my arse is that they penalize an angler in lost weight  for a dead fish; even though it is headed for a meatwagon as soon as it gets off stage. It wasn't but a few months back where I had to stop and chuckle. I heard the MC say that they had to be alive to fight another day. The only reason I could hear that was because I took a break; my knife had gotten hot.

One step at a time...Be careful.

Nope!!  Catch the fish and make the decision to keep or throw back.  Tournaments should follow the same rules, laws, and regulations that apply to every other fishermen within the state.

I've been in the position where the wrong decision, on a smallish walleye, each day of the Gov. Cup cost me a top 5 finish and possibly the win. I really like the format of catch your team's limit of 10 and weigh your best 5 or 6 each day. Eliminates any need for culling and if you choose you can take your fish after they've been cleaned. Unfortunately the cleaning of the weighed fish has become necessary for obvious reasons.

If GF considered bass as a non-game species it might be ok.
