Here is what happens when common sense is left on shore, over the weekend several folks were stranded two miles out on mille lacs lake after a big wind broke the lake open, they floated for a few hours as the rescuers hover craft broke down, they're damn lucky to be safe~There are 6 more people further out including 2 kids and a local reort owner, the pic is of the hover craft coming in for the save, all fishing gear is left on the ice after the rescue

The fishing has been really good in the bays, with this warm weather it makes no sense to wonder out on the main lake,I've floated one time in my younger years for 6 hours on this lake and watched the lake break up all around us,huge sheets of ice pushing up inti the air then sinking, white caps between us and shore, the shore 3 miles away, never again.

Next we'll see folks jumping the gun to drive out and rigs will sink~The day I took this pic 13 trucks went down including a recovery truck.

The best way to weed out the dummies!
Wonderful Reagan quote that says it like it is! "It isn't that Liberals are ignorant. It's just that they know so much that isn't so."

Yeah it is a bad ice year.  I'm still (or was) shooting geese off Sakakawea.  Some decent ice up north but elsewhere, not good at all and will be pretty iffy all year I imagine unless big cold snap occurs.  I think la nina will dump some snow but won't happen until January.  If ice doesn't form by then, I will just have to find a different hobby.  Maybe work on the house for a change???

The big water is not good yet, I'm sure, but the smaller lakes, like lake Metigoshe (AKA-Dead Sea), Long Lake and Carpenter and Upsilon, in the Turtle Mountains have 11-13 inches of the nicest ice we've had in 3 years.  It it clear, solid ice and we took our permanent out, by ATV to be safe, and had absolutely no problems.  ATV's all over the lakes up here.  Student of mine was on Lake of the Woods this weekend and the main lake is still open but the bays are good enough for smaller vehicles.

The ice quality around Grand Forks is excellent.  With no snow cover you're still making ice at 30 degrees.  I was on a lake this weekend with 10+ inches of solid black ice...could see right through the stuff like it was glass....very cool.

Ice is really good and clear on Darling, we drove to the east shore yesterday. Anywhere from 10"-12". Just watch out for the NASTY pressure ridge north of the road grade.

Murdoch, where is the pic of your dodge?

It is unnerving traveling across clear  black ice on the wheeler with no snow, watching those spider cracks move along as you travel caused me to order a new wheeler seat when the day was over...

I think it should have been confiscated. Leaving it there is littering.

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing." -Edmund Burke

"The time at which I stand before you is full of interest. The eyes of all nations are fixed on our Republic. The event of the existing crisis will be decisive in the opinion of mankind of the practicability of our federal system of government. Great is the stake placed in our hands; great is the responsibility which must rest upon the people of the United States. Let us realize the importance of the attitude in which we stand before the world. Let us exercise forbearance and firmness. Let us extricate our country from the dangers which surround it and learn wisdom from the lessons they inculcate."
