Looking to see what those of you that shoot .22-250 use for coyote hunting.  Right now I am shooting a 45 gr. bullet that has 4000 fps and everytime I shoot one it totally rips them wide open.  I like to skin an occassional coyote out and am looking for a good bullet or any suggestions as to what you all use that doesn't rip them wide open.

Recently I've been shooting Federal 55gr soft point factory loads.   They shoot well in my gun and seem to do the job however they tend to pass through often.    I've had really good luck with 55 gr Hornady Vmax.   If you hit them right they don't seem to pass through and they are cheaper than the Nosler ballistic tips.

Speedmaker, you may want to try something like a 55gr hornady Vmax or a hollow point. I dont know what type of bullet your using, but you should be using something that has real fast expansion and doesnt penetrate. I shoot 60gr bergers, but my rifle has a 1-12" twist, most factory 22.250's have a 1-14 which 55gr is the heaviest bullet recomended for that twist. My buddy shoots 50gr Vmaxes with minimal fur damage, I rarely almost never have any penetration with my 60gr's, drops coyotes stone dead. Shooting a little heavier bullet with a higher bc will have less wind drift also.

The 53gn VMax rates a thunk.  The .290BC coupled with 3600-3700fps oughta make it plenty slickery in the wind as well.

If a 45gr bullet rips them apart, using a 53 or 55 vmax probably will also. Try using a non exploding bullet instead and just hope for smaller exit wounds. Id try TSX or if your rifling will allow, or go heavier and slower (62-68 grains) to get less expansion. What bullet are you using now?

i use a 55gr nosler ballistic tip and have had really good luck with them. only time i have had fur problems are on bad hits. but they are also really really tough on fox . they really sandbag the yotes though

The bullet I am currently using now is the Winchester USA  45 gr. JHP.  Muzzle velocity is 4000 fps with a BC of 0.175.  I have a 1-14" twist so I guess I could go a little heavier.  I was looking yesterday at the Hornady VMax and wondering if they would be better.  My problem with the shells i shoot now isnt the exit hole, its the impact side that just gets ripped open.

here you can kinda see some of the damage it does by the yuck hanging out the stomach. This was 1 elated little boy.

you can see the damage it does by the yuck hanging out the bottom.  I hit him right behind the shoulder and it blew the whole stomach out.  This was one elated little boy though, his first coyote hunt.  3.5 years old.

I have used several bullet styles in the 22-250 and the 53 grain flat base works the best for me.Boat tail bullets tend to disintegrate and the flat base will punch thru with minimal damage.Keep in mind that a spine, shoulder,or head shot is critical to drop them immediately. I also wonder if bone fragments or vaporizing body fluids can cause large exits holes as well as the bullet exploding.
