Warden investigating white-tailed deer shooting

North Dakota Game and Fish Department district game warden Corey Erck is investigating the possible illegal shooting of a white-tailed deer found on Bismarck Parks and Recreation District land near the Nishu Archery Complex in south Bismarck, according to a press release.

The deer was found dead with an arrow in it.

“I don’t believe this animal was shot as part of the bow season within the city limits,” Erck said in the press statement. “It was near the practice range, and was shot with a field point and not with a broadhead.”

Anyone with information on the incident is encouraged to contact the Report All Poachers telephone number at 800-472-2121. or contact Erck directly at 701-320-2005. Callers can remain anonymous.

The RAP line offers rewards for information that leads to conviction of fish and wildlife law violators.

I saw this article the other day.  Had to laugh a bit, because the Tribune had used a picture of 2 mule deer.

Don't practice until you get it right, practice until you can't get it wrong.

Some idiot “plinker” I suppose,   I just hope the idiot that did this doesn’t set off a storm of protests and have the city depredation hunt cancelled!   Stupid things like this have a long history of cancelling needed city hunts at many places around the country!  It seems as long as people, even antihunters,  don’t see it or hear of it or experience any negative fallout  they accept or at least tolerate it knowing that a limited hunt is  the only way to reduce problem deer overpopulation!  But when this  crap happens, they often rise up and demand the hunt to stop!  Hope N Dakotans are more level headed.

One would think that anyone with enough interest in archery and presumably the outdoors and in going to the range would know better than this!  Would be nice to fine the guy and turn him in.

The field point is the only part of this that's definitely illegal. I've shot a couple deer on that range and saw a guy take a buck right by the 50 yard target one night as well.

Oh ya Dean? You think they had a city tag and were hunting with a field point and ost the deer?

Well why don't you just list off the other laws that we know were broken here.....hell list just one. Yeah that's what I thought. In the end even the field tip cant be guaranteed to be illegal since there is an offhand chance it was fluke rogue arrow that cleared the backstop. If you've ever walked back there and seen the arrows stuck in the trees you would know anything is possible especially out on one of the walking courses.

Yep, Fluke arrow clearing the backstop, found the deer 20 yards from a dead flying pig. I mean HEY! Its possible. Too funny

I've been out of state hunting but I heard a giant muledeer 200" or so was poached by white earth dam and another whitetail outside of tioga.Just the heads removed in both cases.

If you shot a deer on the range you committed a violation.  The range is within city limits.  The city depradation tags do not allow hunting on the range itself.

All a guy has to do to get a doe in there is walk the courses the one on the south is the easier of the two and your all of a few yard off the one little spot that is off limits.

I wasn’t aware that shooting ANY deer WITHIN the range was legal under the city special depredation hunt!  If legal, it wouldn’t make sense to have broad heads flying around with other people trying to practice!  If a deer hunt. Was authorized within the archery range, IMHO  they’d have to close the range down for casual target shooters,

Hunting on the range is not legel.  The governor's proclamation (which has the force of law) states that a person can only hunt in Bismarck city limits with a depradation tag.  The range is within city limits.  If a person has a depradation tag (as I do) the range and the range trails are off limits to hunting.  So no matter how you look at it it is illegal to hunt on the range.  If you don't have a depradation tag you can't hunt city limits at all.  If you have a depradation tag you can hunt designated areas within city limits, but those areas do not include the range  and its trails.

You best go do a history check before you start spouting off on shit you clearly don't understand. The city may have taken the range out now days but if you call and ask them you will find it was part of the area as was riverwood golf course for that matter(needed a separate permission slip similar to Lincoln oaks) for years and years and the pretty red ribbons could be seen hanging from the trees inside the fence.

My mistake. I thought we were discussing someone shooting a deer on the range a week or so ago, not ancient history.  You are the one who posted the challenge to list what was done illegally by the person who did that. I pointed out what was done illegally. If you wanted to talk about whether it was legal to hunt there fifty years ago you should have clarified.  You have just confirmed the saying “If you want to have people think you are an idiot keep silent. If you want them to be sure you are an idiot, speak up.”

How young are you fifty Yeah! You could hunt the range as long as I hunted the city and that was within the last ten years or so.
